Is it normal to be a germaphobe?

My germaphobia changes randomly and sometimes after I exercise. For example, for a long time I could not drink cups/straws that other people drank from, much to the dismay of many of my friends and family over the years.

I hate it when people use the soap I bathe with to wash their filthy hands.

After exercising heavily, I'll usually feel like even the AIR is dirty and I'll have to shower immediately. Even after showering I'll sometimes feel dirty.

Whenever I use public bathrooms I always hover over the toilets and use a paper towel to open the door to leave.

Sometimes I'll look into the crevices of spaces and how dirty they are will REALLY bother me. For example the leather couch I'm sitting on now has crevices with dirt in it...

For this summer I'm working at a movie theater and I've had to deal with taking out sticky garbage, picking up used popcorn bags and soda cups, as well as mopping bathroom floors. Not sure how I've survived so far, but I have.

I don't like to touch the armrests at movie theaters. I don't want to sit in seats with stuff under them. I can't use silverware in my home that's been sitting in a drawer without washing it off first. I don't like touching door handles outside of my home unless I have to. I don't like wearing other people's jackets or clothes.

Is this normal?

You have an OCD but it's not that bad and it's completely normal. Deal or no deal's host, and america's got talent judge, Howie Mandel suffers the same thing. I think he's written a book about it too. Hope that helps! If not, go see a doctor.

Other than the exercise-air thing and the part about the silverware in a drawer, I feel the same way as you about everything else. I think it's just being hygienic. No?
Shit, what if it IS weird and not normal?

I agree with you down to every word. There are, however, a few other things I do as well:

    1. I wash my hands for at least the recommended 20 seconds, but more commonly wash them longer.

    2. Sometimes the doorknobs in my home feel contaminated.

    3. My hands often feel dirty, even when I've hardly come into contact with anything.

    4. In the wintertime, my hands become dry from frequent washing and dry air - to the point where the backs become rough, form cracks, itch, and bleed. I try to use lotion, but I just despise how it feels when applied.

    5. I couldn't imagine myself going anywhere without bringing some hand sanitizer along.

    6. After preparing and cooking meat, I can't shake the feeling that I've somehow missed a spot or left an area contaminated; I fear someone will perish from food poisoning, and I will be at fault.

    7. I often sanitize my pens and pencils before or during use.

Simply saying, I think it's Normal for you to feel like this. Just curious, though - Do you feel the same way about anything above? Thanks. :)

Its true! But it's not just your eyelids, everyone has microscopic mites all over their bodies but they are not harmful to us. If u don't believe me, google it. I learnt it in nursing college
And I agree with the poster who says it's OCD, go see a doctor

Blop... Where on earth did you get the eyelid theory from?! Haha... Good scare tactic.
Same as first comment, silverware and air isn't an issue but I'm the same with everything else.
Haha what would you do of you shared a house with someone and went to get in the shower only to find period blood on the floor and wall... So gross!!!

I agree period blood is gross, but seriously just wash it off, use something to clean it with and move on with your day.

No it's not. You have OCD, it's a mental thing. Go see a doctor. Seriously, my sister is just like you and it's especially not right when the whole world has to submit to you guys demands because you don't want to touch germs. If that's the case you should go wash your self over and over again cause in case you have not heard you are a big germ. The human body is made up of millions and millions of little germs. Your eyelids are covered in little mites, did you know that? Go see at doctor!!!

I'm not the original poster, but...
I know I have germs too, but they are MY germs & I don't mind my germs.
