Is it normal to be a casual heroin user?

So, I've been using heroin since December of last year, about 11 months now. I only do it about a couple times a month on average, none of my friends or family know about it. I don't want them to because of the stigma. It seems to me like heroin is just like pot and alcohol, which have both been prohibited and stigmatized (see "Reefer Madness.") Some people become alcoholics, most don't. The only difference is, people who manage to be casual users of heroin (and we are out there, you may know a few) will never tell you, because of the stigma it carries. Kind of like how old people assume smoking weed makes you lose your mind. Thoughts on the normalcy of casual heroin?

Heroin (and other opiates) are the only truly physically addictive drug besides nicotine.

The world is not full of casual cigarette smokers, although there are some.

Roll the dice my friend. Good luck!

If you lose, don't worry. The taxpayers will take care of you.

well, i've smoked cigs casually for 6 years now. and plenty of people just do it at parties. also, most users i've known have jobs...

my guess, is you just started using the internet about five months ago? if you use the keypad to toggle the screen the text will get bigger so you can read it without glasses.

Ha. I've been using the internet since the 386 was hot. If you're implying that I'm a geezer recently hooked on the web, there's your answer.

I understand that there are cigarette smokers in all walks of life and some are very productive people.

We were discussing heroin use in this thread, and that's what you gamble your life with, that's the drain on the taxpayers.

I'm sure it would be sweet to be able to use heroin casually and never have it impact one's life negatively, but I ain't gonna try.

Cigarettes are quite the contrary. If everyone quit smoking today, the government would be in turmoil.

And I've been wearing glasses since I was ten. Some such about whacking off too much I think. Anyway, my screen type and resolution are to my liking, thank you very much.

I had a cousin who was an heroin addict in Mauritius. Then his uncle bought him a ticket and made him returned here. He was okay when he arrived but then fell ill because here there's no heroin, nobody consumes, nobody sells. He fell into alcohol and after six years here died. You should be aware that all heroin addicts used to be casual user.

I heard that 97% of heroin users die from overdoses and the inability to stop. Im OK with light drugs like weed, but chemical drugs I think kill you and make you really addicted.

You heard wrong. Most fatal overdoses are caused by a combination of drugs or alcohol, usually not heroin alone. Heroin users also die of Hepatitis, AIDS, organ failure, bacterial infections, heart complications and the ones who don't die as a direct result of their heroin use die from everyday normal shit like everybody else does.

And heroin comes from a plant (papaver somniferum).

I have a friend who was a casual user and now doesn't use at all. It is entirely possibly to use heroin casually. However, the reason people don't say this is because it encourages others. Everyone thinks they can be that casual user, that addiction is something that happens to other, weaker people. The fact that heroin addiction is commonplace shows that many are wrong in that judgement.

qgi ever think heroin is not addictive or wont become addicted to its is reeally really naive and blind or just in denial if they themself are a user.. but on the same note yes there can be occasional users and there are. but if those occasional user start using more and more frequently without a doubt they will first become physicallly dependant then physically and mentally addicted.. i was an occasional herion user for few years and it never became a problem, never went into withdrawl or felt i needed it and had to use more frequently, but after i was in a bad car accident being pretty much PIT monuvered by some guy on the express way at 70 mph causing me to crash into the divider and then bounce back across all the lanes into a ditch and this asshole sped off onto the first exist and never got caught.. i had pain issues and got prescribed 30mg oxycodone 180 a month which is 6 a day.. after a few months i became physically dependant but i wasnt abusing them and never took more then my prescribed dose.. after a lot of physical therapy i did a 5 day detox with suboxone and sucesfully got off the oxys but i have many friends who had no pain problems taking oxys and heroin, few of which died of overdoses, and it was never just the heroin or oxy alone it was always a combination with xanax or other benzo or downer.. most active heroin addicts dont die from a straight heroin overdose, dont get me wrong some do but most are b.c of a combination of drug or especially the heroin out here on long island thats cut with large amounts of fentynal.. so my point is yes there can be and are occasional users but its a very easy line to cross and become addicted if you give in just a little to use one more time a month which becomes two more times etc until its few times a day and iv seen it happen to people i grew up with first hand

Opium has been illegal in china for over a thousand years for a REASON. It's called the 7th scourge of man for a REASON. There are over 7 million Americans that use opioid replacement therapy with subutex, suboxone, methadone, and scopolamine FOR a REASON. Make sure u don't do it more often, that's the mistake I made when I did black tar. Statted on pills, switched to chasing the dragon because it was cheaper and got me way higher, then switched to needles. 3 years later, I'm on such a high dose of methadone I can't function the first 4-6 hours of the day. Be careful as hell with that shit. If u EVER decide to switch to needles make sure u start with a Uber tiny amount till u can gauge the strength of the product and ur bodies response to it, almost all overdoses involving heroin are because some noob wanted to rush just that much harder and end up cold and stiff with the stick still in their arm for whoever to find the next morning.

Jeez i am getting so many angry comments by people who think they know everything there is to know, this just proves how entrenched peoples' biases are on the subject. thankfully i didn't ask this to reaffirm my normalcy but to test how irrational and biased people really are on this subject.

Totally normal. I use heroin when people whip it out at parties, or when they get it for me for a gift, maybe every once in a while when I've been extra good I might reward myself with some. Sure, the indescribably blissful euphoria is nice, but it's not like it makes every other positive emotional and physical sensation pale in comparison, and it's not like I'm going to ruin my life or start doing whatever degrading act is neccessary to get enough heroin into my system to dull the incessant pain of not being high on heroin. I guess you could call me a casual or social heroin user. I don't even like being called a heroin 'user'. I prefer 'heroin fancier'.

The heroin addiction has nothing to do with being "weak". This is a laughable statement... It causes your body to become physically dependant. Also the withdrawal effects are EXTREMELY bad and can even cause death.
So even if your strong enough you may not be able to stop at a certain point without medical help.

It WILL cause your body to be dependent Best of luck not dieing.

25% of people who try heroin will become addicted (and it will ruin their lives). That is an outrageously high number compared with other drugs. So the truth is that you could well be one of the 75% who can try it and not get hooked. As a recovering heroin addict myself, who has been on methadone for 15 years (and can't get off methadone, even though I haven't used heroin for years now), I must warn you that you are playing the most dangerous game possible. Once upon a time, I had more willpower than anyone I knew. I was a very high achiever. But the drug destroys all that. It destroys the very things that you think are immutable about yourself. It corrodes your spirit and turns it into a metaphorical demon. You're forced to become a liar and people treat you like scum, which makes you constantly defensive and indignant, i.e. a pain to be around. It's awful. Please stop now.

I have used heroin a couple of times myself. I did not really enjoy the experience as much as other drugs (cocaine, xtc) because of the numbing effect.

But I do agree that it doesn't seem as addictive as the media and so-called portray it to be. I do feel that it is a relatively harmful drug, considering that (as opposed to coke xtc or even mdma, which only stimulates and maintains already present endorphines) it triggers the brain into producing endorphines which otherwise would not be available, which IMO after a while could make it a problem to produce these endorphines without the use of heroin.

However, i think that if you are able to maintain your usuage during recreational or partying activities, which would lead to your brain associate it with this instead of a daily routine, it could work out.

Not so, my presumpous friend. Methadone relieves cravings by blocking euphoric effects. This web site has more http://alcoholism.about.com/cs/heroin/f/herion_faq09.htm

I have seen them in action. Compared to heroin withdrawal, methadone withdrawal is nothing.

Anyway, opiate addition usually ends in suicide by an intentional overdose. Addicts get tired of feeling sick - overdose is the only pleasant way out.
