Is it normal to avoid family get togethers because of joblessness

I don't have a job and I don't want to go to family meetings only to be asked what I'm doing with my life or to be glared at with pity or disdain. Most of my family is either retired or happily working so they don't understand what it's like to look for a job in today's economy.

I am not sure if it's normal, but it was definitely the nicest holiday I have had in a long time. I Didn't feel like carpooling with my dad and listen to him yell at me for three hours on the way to my snooty cousin and aunts house. So I ordered takeout and had fun with my neighbours. My mom and great grandma were the only ones that missed me. I told them next year they should just hang with me and my dog.

    Tell them you've retired early.

I thought a family was supposed to support each other, especially in trying times.

lol not really. Many family members can be catty and spiteful. ESPECIALLY if they feel you're taking too long to solve your problems.

No he won't! He's already said that the Mexicans are going to build his silly ass wall for him. How's that getting Americans back to work?

I wouldn't go to the gatherings then: I'm sorry you have such an awful family and if you can't do that tell them you're writing a novel
