Is it normal to avoid dating because you still live with your mom?

Many times I have found promising guys and fallen a little for them, but I didn't take a step towards a romantic involvement with them because I still live with my mom. I aspire to a best-paying job, which if I be lucky enough I'll get by the end of this year, but till then I can't have my own apartment. It's like I needed my own place, financial independence and privacy to view myself with someone. This makes me feel frustrated and hopeful at the same time. Am I normal?

Yeah, I know a few college students who live with their parents who don't feel that they should date until they are independent.

  • I am in the exact same position. I've learned to stop caring. Maybe you're in a different position, but for me I'm not just living with my parents, I also have two siblings. So I really can't have women over to my house. There's always people around, we would never be able to get real privacy.

Whatever. I'm not ashamed of it, I'm in college and I'm trying to become independent. Be proud of who you are, your circumstances do not define you, its how you handle your circumstances that defines you.

But I have arrangements to move out later this year so maybe I have a biased perspective :p

This is exactly how I feel. I've tried dating before, really only once, and my insecurities got in the way. When I move out I imagine that perhaps I will be a more confident person because I'm honestly ashamed of where I live.

    • Nah man a change in your circumstance isn't going to make you confident. Confidence, by definition, comes from within. Self acceptance.

It's normal but don't hold back! You might be missing out on amazing relationships or people. I understand you have different priorities, but live a little. Life is too short.

Is this economy most people live with parents and family. Everyone is poor right now and work is so hard to come by. The fucking idiots up top do not seem to be doing shit about the money problems either. Yeah it is normal to feel this way.

Ha ha my parents always said dont bring the girls arounds. They did not want to meet them. They couldnt keep up with my dating life so they did not want to know. They were just friends to! But yeah, get some privacy, get settled. Sounds good. That way you dont have to explain who the new bow is around your arm.
