Is it normal to ask to study a semi-stanger

I'm in a psychology class and we have a project coming up. I have to interview a person under the age of 25 about their life and being young. I'm at a new school where I know no one and I want to interview someone that I could potentially be friends with. I had one person in mind that seems really cool but I barely know them. We have class together and we've said maybe no more than 'Hey' to each other. Is it normal if I ask to interview that person even though I we dont really talk. I'm hoping a friendship could come out of it but if its weird to ask then I can kiss any potential friendship good-bye.

    Honestly I say go for it if he or shes a nice person they will say yes if they aren't so nice you'll get a no but then you'll know they aren't worth your friendship! Good luck i'm rooting for you
