Is it normal to ask someone out for lunch when you barely know them?

I was just in a car with my mom and she said that she wanted to take out my former landlord from a couple of years ago for lunch despite the fact they barely know each other. They were never friends, hardly saw each other. My mother has been prone to saying that people she met for two days as her "close friends".

Is it me, or is that abnormal? What does that say about her?

It's weird for sure but it's also nice to care about someone you barely know. Sometime it may make somebody's day.

Her understanding of friendship is odd. The gesture of asking someone you barely know for lunch is a kind gesture, but sometimes it is a ploy for sex.

It's weird of her to call acquaintances close friends, yeah 0.o

But asking a stranger out for dinner? I'd be too much of a coward to do it but it's certainly a nice gesture.
