Sometimes, people say they want your opinion when they've already made up their minds and they want to confirm their own opinions. When you give them your opinion and it differs from theirs, they get angry. I've had friends like this.

I've also seen where people can't even give a good opinion. You ask them which is better, the blue one or the red one and they get hung up on some other detail that's not even at question.

A lot of people think their views are the right views. Maybe they asked b/c they're curious (or want people to agree w/them), then when someone disagrees they want to prove their point.

It's annoying when they're rude about it or completely ignore your opinion and say you're wrong just b/c they don't like it. I agree to disagree! :D

The argument between Socrates and Euthyphro is the best example I can think of.

Euthyphro basically tries to justify his actions of killing his father to Socrates, but ultimately Socrates doesn't agree and tries to advise Euthyphro why he was wrong in his actions. Euthyphro, as you may except, was angry that Socrates didn't see things his way.

This basically relates to almost all people when it comes to advise. Most of us just hate being wrong, or not having others believe the way we do to justify our actions.

So yes, it is normal to be irritated when someone does this to you.

    Cheers,

  • He's probably rationalizing it to find out whether your advice was strong or weak.

    So yeah normal.

To be fair, sometimes it can be the way someone answers a question, not what they actually said that gets people defensive.

I always wonder why people post IIN around here sometimes and state plain as day in the question that they're not interested in a particular opinion. The IIN equivalent of putting your fingers in your ears.

Just because they want your opinion doesn't mean they need to comply (or even agree) with everything you advise them to do or your interpretation. I don't see it as ungrateful to do that either, more like productive.

It must be normal... people do it here all the time!

But really I understand what you mean. Why ask a question if you think you won't like the answer, right?

Yeah, i think some people ask advice in hopes it is what they want to hear, and if it's not they deem it bad advice.

        Some don't even want that.

There's a good portion of people who simply want others to back them up, even though they KNOW they're doing the wrong thing.

They don't want advice or to know if something is normal or not - they just want to justify their bad behavior.

I always said if you don't want the truth...then don't ask! Especially me.
