Is it normal to approach only those you "don't mind" being with?

I was looking at my facebook friend list the other day and something stroke me.
I had no interest in anyone on the list. I knew all of them, I've met all them in person but I had talked to them (and added them in facebook) only because I "didn't mind" doing so. in other words, least amount of interest possible. to me it was like keeping a record of who I've met that I barely ever looked at.
on the other hand every single person that I had a slight interest in was *missing* . for some reason I chose not to talk to those people and they were not added or befriended.

I'm not entirely sure why, but I suspect it's because of fear of saying/doing something "stupid".

is this normal?

I find people I want to know very intimidating, which makes it harder for me to talk to them. I feel very fortunate that people actually make an effort with me, because I can be such a coward. Maybe you find them intimidating too?
