Is it normal to always spend money when hanging out with people?

This is a situation I just find completely irrational. Why do always people feel the need to unnecessarily spend money when hanging out? For example, my friends always want to drink something "out", even if it is just a bar with no music in the corner. And I just don't get it, you can drink the same at home for a third of the price and without smelling like smoke.

Food is also an issue. I don't mind going to restaurants every now and then, to try new things... but I don't believe that going out to eat should be a habit at all. I don't even mind cooking for my friends at all... but people just seem to always want to go out and spend money.

The main issue here is that social life is now my main expense. And well, I am trying and trying all the time to convince people that we don't need to spend money every time we see each other to have fun.... but no one really seems to understand my mentality.

So well, pretty much I am wondering if this situation ever changes. I am 25 years old now, and I really wouldn't want this to continue forever. So, is it normal?

Yes, sadly it is normal. Almost everything costs so much money now.

Wow, where have you found a bar that lets people smoke?
As for the rest, for us eating out is where we meet other people, because as constant travelers, our circle of acquaintances, changes almost daily
But we, as other cruisers are, selective about when and where we eat out. Two for one, or half price pizza nights (2 different nights) are nice, as are the all you can eat and drink nights at Portsmouth Dominica, for $20.00. There are so many things you and your friends can do that don't cost an arm and a leg, that it's just a matter of timing and planning to have fun w/o breaking the bank. Suggest a picnic at a park, and as you don't mind doing the cooking, make up a great picnic basket. Don't be such a follower; try leading. Do some research and find interesting and fun, but cheap things to do. The Zoo, for instance? Minor league ball games? A lot of places have free concerts in the park, come spring and summer.

What is normal anyway? Is your friend lonely and looking to pick someone up? Why not invite a bunch of friends over for a potluck dinner, make some Margaritas, play some tunes and have your own party? It's worth a shot.

I think just like you. Lots of people whine about having money problems, but to my eyes, it's almost like they do all they can to spend all their money mindlessly, and I can't get to do it as well.
I can say that you're not alone, don't let others drag you down, be proud of what you think it's right.

Worst thing for me is not being able to smoke at a gig, I miss that,

Its be good if there were specialist bars that allowed smoking though

I was living in Austria for a few months and they allowed you to smoke there inside bars. I think it is the last first world country to allow so.

I disagree with you. They should allow no owner to let people smoke inside. If they let them, 100% will allow people to do it. You have to understand that the people working for the club/bar have to stay inside during the whole day or evening, inhaling smoke during hours every day.

Which is why it should only be a specialist thing, that way you are aware when you go there and/or apply for a position.

If you're not a smoker there will still be many non smoking bars as the demand for it is there

Your idea sounds interesting, but almost impossible to make real. The only way would be to make the owner pay a high tax to do so, but I don't think they would accept it.

Without trying to start a discussion, let me just tell you that smoke bans in enclosed places are the best thing that ever happened in the world.

Aware it's nothing more than an unrealistic idea and I can understand why you would feel that way, especially at pubs serving food, I would never smoke near people eating but for me it's a pain in the ass, despite seeing the benefits

I agree. I think it should be owner's choice.
