Is it normal to always smell oranges or some sort?

I always had this kind of thing, I always smell oranges or citrus fruits even there's none of them are nearby. It triggers when I drank, ate or smelled oranges or something like them. This time I ate nothing that smells or taste like oranges, but it triggered from a hand sanitizer that I used. Same goes with alcohols, but they don't last long, and they only trigger when I'm about to sleep. But this one lasts for a week or two. This all started three to four years ago.

Actually, this kind of question was asked here in this website, and it's called a "phantom scents" or "phantom smells". But by looking at that one, it's not enough for me and I want more opinions, information or experiences of others.

Rarely, I will sometimes get a whiff of what my deceased great-grandmother used to smell like. Not that she smelled of feces, because she didn't. Neither do I recall her smelling of urine, like most other elderly seem to do. She did have some type of sore(s) on her leg that had an unpleasant odor, but I do think that this occurrence smells like that. Heck! I can't even really remember what they smelled like, which is a good thing.

      • Whenever I go outside, I swear I can smell dog poop. There's no poop around and nobody else can smell it but me. And, no, it's not on my shoe.

It could be cow manure. Usually in Spring, people will often use cow manure as a fertilizer. The smell is disgusting.

          • Or the thawing and decomposition of dog poop accumulated over the winter months.

Oh dear god! You have just reminded me of something from my childhood. I was once digging in the ground with a friend of mine. It was cold so, I was wearing gloves. Well, we found a smelly substance that I somehow managed to get on one of my gloves. I don't think we knew what it was (or maybe, it was just me that couldn't figure it out?). I didn't like the smell so, I put the glove in my backpack. When I got home, my mom opened the bag and was greeted with this terrible stench. I told her what happened and she, with a shocked look on her face, told me that it was dog shit!

    • Yeah, but after smelling it for two weeks it's going to bother you a little.

Sometimes I've smelled things that have no apparent source. I have either linked these occurrences with the paranormal or with neurological issues (olfactory hallucinations,etc.).

    • Is it that bad that it needs to be taken care of by visiting to a doctor?

I honestly don't know. I don't think that it would mean a brain tumor, as olfactory hallucinations are usually associated with a burning smell. Then again, if I am remember correctly, I recall reading about mental associations, which can sometimes be triggered by something random. For intense, let's say that something significant happened in your past and whenever you came in contact with a certain something, it triggered and instant association. Perhaps, this is what is happening here. Is there any significant event that might have had something to do with citrus?

        • No, nothing much are happening right here, everything much is pretty ordinary. The smell has stopped now, but it'll come back for sure.
