Is it normal to always fingerspell in asl what people say.

uhmm well for some reason after i took americal sign language in school i always seem to fingerspell with my hand at my side certain words that people say or i say. for example if someone says "cool" i would fingerspell that, sometimes with my hand in my pocket. ITS A HABIT!

My goal this year is to start taking ASL. I have this other issue of spelling things out on my leg with my finger. One day not too long ago I put the two together and started wondering if ASL might come easier for me because I do that. Whaddya think?????

I think it's normal. I've only taken ASL 1&2 but I've been told by many peoplp to finger spell words I hear and see to improve my speed and accuracy. My step-mom fingerspells what she sees on billboards whenever she's in a car and I try to translate whatever I hear. If I'm listening to a song I'll fingerspell/translate it, when I'm reading a book I'll fingerspell the words and I walk around my house (& sometimes in stores) signing songs. Most of the time I don't notice it until someone points it out. You shouldn't worry about it because it'll only make you better and I was at the top of my class because of it.
