Is it normal to allow an eleven year old to watch "the grudge"

I have recently posted, asking if it is normal for my nine-year-old son to be obsessed with scary stories and films. One factor that contributes to this obsession, and is rather annoying for me, from a parental standpoint, is that my eleven-year-old nephew is allowed to watch various films and television programmes that my son is not.

We are currently in a phase where my son is lobbying to watch scarier films. His cousin recently was allowed to watch "The Grudge," "The Shining," "Shaun of the Dead," and "Army of Darkness". This of course, fueled my son's desire to watch these films and every few days I have a debate over the merits of "The Walking Dead," or yet another assurance that zombies and ghosts are not even actually scary.

I feel (possibly unreasonably) irritated that my nephew's parents allowed this, as I have seen the films in question and think they are all a bit much for an eleven-year-old, let alone my nine-year-old son. I personally think "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is on the right level of thrilling-but-not-too-scary for my son, just to illustrate what level of scariness he is ready for.

I made a few critical remarks about my nephew's viewing habits, and his parents have taken offense. I think they are being a bit lax with regards to his viewing habits. They assert that they are not, as he is eleven, and does not have nightmares.

Am I completely out of touch, and is the general consensus now that this sort of film is fine for eleven-year-olds? In the interests of full disclosure, I confess that I probably won't change my mind regardless, I am just curious.

I wouldn't allow my children to watch those when they were 11. No way! Good on you for being a positive role model for your child!

I was allowed to watch the exorcist at 6 and saw childs play at 4 ( my grandma put it on my tv when I was going to bed..hahah) and I come from a very catholic family...now to be honest..I'm a 20 year old girl who will not go in the bathroom with out making sure the shower curtains are pulled back and I keep my closet door tied shut...but I still love scary movies! That thrill of being scared, getting the blood pumping...it's fun. I say let him watch a classic...or watch more gore and less suspense..because while gore might gross him out...suspense will scare him..watch village of the dammed...not to scary but it's somthing..

Theres something totally frealy about that film, id have been happier with my kids watching the chainsaw masacre to be honest. The Grudge freaked me out. I used to hide behind a pillow when i was watching 'are you afraid of the dark' with my kids. So as a self confessed wimp, id say 'nooo'

It depends on the kid to know if it's normal. If your kid seems squeamish and has lots of nightmares, then you probably shouldn't let him watch it. Then again, a good method to stop your kid from watching innappropriate films is to show him an extremely scary movie to prevent him from watching other movies.

While in college my neighbor had a 13 year old girl, and a 6 year old boy. His favorite movie was Dawn of the Dead. Whenever he was acting up they put the movie on and he'd be glued to it. I think it really boils down to the kid. Some can handle it, and some can't.

I say Raiders when I was about 10 or 11 and its my favorite movie of all time! Anyway, the Grudge isnt that scary... but I do know some people who are terrified of stuff like that. It depends, and I think Raiders is much more violent and terrifying, especially for PG haha!

I was the only child not allowed to watch many movies like that in my circle of friends, and to this day there are a lot of things I havent seen and feel I missed out on seeing. Really it partly depends on the child and their capacity, I know plenty of people far older who refuse to watch movies like that. However I dont think Id even rank The Grudge very high up on the scary list.... The american adaptation is rather comical, and that was one of the first scary movies I saw. XD
