Is it normal to actually enjoy screaming vocals?

Hi =)
To all fellow music lovers out there, I would like to know...

How normal it is to sincerely enjoy the musical quality of screaming vocals?

This is becoming a more common feature in general as music progresses, and there are many different types of growls, screams, drones, shouts, inward-screams and rattles around in heavier music at the moment.

Now I, like many, have experienced, and appreciated a wide range of musical styles and genres, but have related to metal as my favourite.

And i've never before, untill recently, understood the appeal of such vocal parts. However, lately i'm really, genuinely enjoying them for their sound, and musical purpose.
They sound just perfect, and awesome to me if they're right.

But I remember, I used to hold the view, as many do, that they were loud, shallow, talentless, incoherent, and abrasive.

So whats happened?
have I been indoctrinated, desensitized, or enlightened?

Tell me your opinion, as everyone's counts =)
All responses will be greatly appreciated, even you "i <3 bieber) fans! I know you're out there... =P

I don't really like them, but they are appropriate for the music. 10

I very rarely enjoy them.. In the occasional Deftones song they work nicely. Most of the time they don't add anything to the track and it seems more like they're there to show off that the singer can pig squeal or growl rather than because it's any kind of emotional expression. I'm more accepting of the kind of loud Nirvana yelling when it feels genuine and natural.

Either way I don't really like 99% of metal.

There's nothing weird about listening to any genre of music. That's why it's out there, for the listener to enjoy. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • I honestly can't stand it. As soon as I hear anything death metal I just have to either leave the room or turn my iPod up to max. Like ThroughRock said, it sounds ghastly, like vomiting, and you can't hear what they're saying so there's not even any point in the vocals. Death metal and anything similar will NEVER be better than classic rock and acoustic.

I depends, im not that big into screamo. I do like some songs like that (A few from Korn, and Disturbed are great), but they have to have a lot of legible music and not just screaming.

Im more into classic rock/metal (Black Sabbath, Ac/DC, Metallica, etc.),and some more modern hits, (ShineDown, Nickelback, God Smack, Creed, etc.) and Grunge/alternative, (Nirvana).

Love to scream to the screaming vocals.
Personally, I believe it has a lot to do with my current life situation, etc...
But, all in all, I LOVE scream-O type music <3
...with the exception of a few bands that just don't have the skill to scream the way I prefer, but yeah.
    xD

Oh, and the only way you would be indoctrinated is if you DIDN'T listen to this music what with the false prophets telling you it's "bad" or "will send you to hell".

I don't like screamed vocals but I do enjoy growls, rasps, and drones. Growls - Cannibal Corpse, Rasps - good band is Mgla, and for good drones you should check out Inquisition\m/

Seems to pretty much be split 50/50 with lovers and haters, and a minority of unsure peoples... =P
Hmmm I wonder which side will win...?

I like screams as do many people, but I question how "musical" they actually are.

To me it's just like every single line is "UOUOURGHHHGHGHGHGGHGH!" and nothing else. It's like vomiting. I don't see why it's so popular. Really, I don't see why some people dislike regular singing and can only listen to extremely low 8-minute grunting songs.
