Is it normal to absolutely hate dubstep?

I think it is the most disturbing music i've ever heard. It sounds like what people would be listening to at a rave with tons of drugs and alcohol and i'm not talking about weed im talkin your lsd and acid type of mumbojumbo. Seriously though the music is atrocious and half the students in my highschool adore it.

It is normal to have your preferences, likes and dislikes. I happen to love dubstep a lot. It is not synonymous with "LSD, and acid type mumbo jumbo" as I have never done either of them!

This being said I absolutely hate John Denver's music, its all personal opinion,

• I didn't like dubstep before. But after I took some ecstasy, I understand why people like it so much.

• It's sooooo shit and bass wobbles sound like farts so much that i actually feel embarrassed when i hear other people listening to it! It has taken over music and pushed out all the people with talent. People go "oh it's got the sickest bass" meh i've heard more intense bass on merzbow records, and that is just circut bending! Dubstep is known by people who are actually cool as "twelve year old music". Don't blame dubstep though, blame the retards that listen to it. It's not even good on drugs, there are way better genres for that!!!!

I like it in moderation.

I'm biased because it has its roots in a music scene I really liked. Or the edge of a scene. I was into lo-fi, trip hop, blunted beats, acid jazz, but also veered into drum and bass (which dubstep seems to borrow from). We're probably still ten to fifteen years away from trip hop influences entering popular music again so, in the meantime, I'm glad part of what I liked is still influencing things.

Always nice to see someone else who likes Trip Hop. I think if we had a music swap, we'd both be happy chappies.

We're a rare breed, and I really have no idea why more people don't love Trip Hop. It's big, cinematic, clever, experimental, draws from some amazing influences and - for some reason - all Trip Hop you hear is written by intelligent people. Where there are lyrics, they actually mean something (as opposed to just whatever word would rhyme).

I like post Trip Hop too. If I ever get my arse in gear and start writing music again, it'll sound like Trip Hop.

You got any slightly rarer Trip Hop you'd recommend beyond the obvious candidates? You've probably heard of them but as a starting point, I'm going to say Whale. They worked with Tricky so it's not completely out there (despite being Swedish Trip Hop) and later Whale is more Trip Pop than Hop. Oh, and Intastella were really good.

I adore Trip Hop. People don't like it more because they don't know it. Every person who heard any of the artists I played at my home at the time left desperate to have copies of what I listened to or pieces of paper with names of tracks and bands. It made me feel kind of cool, a trendsetter really.

You, I and disthing need to set up some kind of online virtual radio station and take it in turns DJing from our own collections. Apart from one person I shouldn't have let slip away, I've never met people who shared my love of Trip Hop. I always wanted to have someone to talk to about it.

I love introducing it to people too. I know it's a slight cliche but watching people react the first time they hear Portishead's Glory Box is really something. If I got told I could only ever listen to ten songs for the rest of my life, that would be one of the first on the list.

Glory Box makes me cum (metaphorically). My favourite Portishead song. I love singing it, but a man singing "Give me a reason to be... a woman" sounds a little odd :)

I'm not sure I could determine which are obscure and aren't, they all seem relatively unknown, except the big 3 (Portishead, Tricky and Massive Attack).

I guess I'll just give you a list of ones I can think of and see right now on my computer:

DJ Krush
UNKLE
Archive
Halou
DJ Shadow
Forss
Bonobo
All India Radio
Soap Kills
Sneaker Pimps
AIM
Moth Equals
Akira Yamaoka
Belleruche
Blockhead
Bluba Lu
Cibo Matto
Cold Cut
DJ Cam
Emika
Emiliana Torrini
Grapes
Quantic
Stateless
Télépopmusik
Theodor Bastard
Thievery Corporation

Of course some of them aren't exclusively Trip Hop, and some of them might not be considered Trip Hop at all by some (I find the line blurry; downtempo, nu jazz, alternative hip hop?) but I hope there's some you haven't heard of :) Feel free to reciprocate, I'm always on the look out for good new Trip Hop. I'll check out Whale and Intastella now.

Oh also, although they're maybe a little more industrial, Trent Reznor (NIN) started a project with his lovely lover-wife called 'How To Destroy Angels'. The songs 'A Drowning' and 'The Spaces in Between' definitely have that mood and atmosphere Trip Hop is famous for.

Kidney Thieves are pretty industrial too, but have a couple of songs with a Trip Hop nod.

I have indeed. They were kind of my introduction, quickly followed by Portishead and Tricky. Then Whale, Lamb, Martina Topley Bird, Mr. Scruff, Trout, Monk&Canatella, and lots of bands that were only semi-Trip Hop. Then the bands which came after Trip Hop. I still love Sneaker Pimps and Morcheeba. I always think Groove Armada are a bit Trippy Hop too.

Right now I'm off to listen to "Anything" by Martina Topley Bird because it's absolutely beautiful and I haven't heard it for ages. :)

You take a bunch of Molly, lose ur shirt somewhere, and end up spending the rest of the night after the show/party juggling the 3 bendy lil 19yos you brought home. Lol I was totally dead for like a week after that one.

You must be old enough to have realised by now people love and loathe different types of music. We're not all one homogenous blob, we each have different preferences. So yes it's normal to dislike, even passionately, a certain style of music.

I tend to like the less danceable, more atmospheric Dubstep, not the stuff on repeat in clubs like Nero and Skrillex.

But there is good music and shitty music in every genre, and there is good dubstep out there. :P

I have my moments. My husband tends to overplay music when he finds something he likes. It has a fast burnout potential. But it isn't all bad. At this point, I just like to be a brat and refuse to admit that I do occasionally enjoy it.

Someone posted this on Facebook a few hours ago... D, is that you?

Anywho, I'll just tell you what I told her. Another girl posted that since she heard it on the radio, it has become too main stream for her and she needs to find another music genre (dawwwhhh :(). So don't worry, every time is it played on the radio you are joined by another "omg underground rebel" shit-licker.

You really must have gotten the wrong idea of what I was talking about. I have a distaste for people who abandon music they like once it becomes mainstream, and the only way in which they may maintain their identity as "rebel underground" (shit-lickers) they must constantly dig through and find underground music. I don't understand why people feel that genre or popularity should inhibit them from enjoying music. Being liked by millions doesn't make something bad.

Comment Hidden ( show )

• shade_ilmaendu

No, it just so happens that a lot of what is liked by millions isn't very good. Look at Skrillex. >.<

Perhaps you should have been more clear (or better yet refrain from using insults, something I have been endeavoring to do in life and online). I can understand the kind of people you're talking about, my boyfriend is kind of bad with that sometimes. Everytime he likes a band and their style changes, he generally stops listening to them.

Bands aren't always bad when they become popular. But becoming popular can make bands bad. I feel Green Day is a perfect example of musical quality that degraded once they got a little too much fame.

At the same time, your friend has a very good point, and here's why. Having been going to electronic music festivals for the past few years, since hitting the mainstream they have gone way down in quality. Now there are too many kids running around, getting way too fucked up. The culture is diluted, pretty much dead. People are assholes, nobody even knows about PLUR anymore and shit the old school ravers was into is actually actively hated now (candi, whistles, etc.)

The scene changed from a place for friendly, openminded people who experimented and partied responsibly and loved one another into a bunch of idiot kids, fistbumping and grinding and snorting lines in the bathroom, puking all over the floors and seats.

That's why a lot of people I know are upset that rave has become mainstream. It's done far more harm than good.

You're talking about people that are way more interesting and appreciative of music culture than the average shit-licker that digs through the internet looking for an underground band to call their own to make themselves feel unique and special.

Dubstep is drug music, Simple.

If you have never tried drugs and dubstep you wont understand.

You probably want to argue that you shouldnt need drugs to enjoy music and i agree, however its somthing of an epiphany when you try either mdma/ketamine etc for the first time and listen to dub or electro...

It all suddenly makes sense. Its an amazing experience.
