Is it normal tipping

Do people know that it's customary to tip the server 20% of the bill when dining at a restaurant? I'm a waitress and I wonder sometimes what people are thinking leaving nothing! I make $4.00 an hour; my income is dependent on tips

I think that paying waitstaff a hourly rate below minimum wage should be criminal. Waitstaff should make at least the minimum wage and any tips should be an added bonus, they should not be reliant on inconsistent tips to make up their wage. If restaurants have to, raise the meal price slightly-- when people go out to dinner at a sit-down restaurant it should be treated like a treat or privilege, and an upcharge of $2 on a $10 meal would not break someone who has the disposible means to be eating out in the first place. I have never been a waiter, but I think that the standard of wage should be updated for these people at a federal-level.

For all of the people who don't understand this, here it is. When dining in a restaurant you are receiving a SERVICE. A charge for this service is not reflected in the cost of the food on the menu. THE TIP IS A PAYMENT FOR THE SERVICE. It is true that excellent tips should be for excellent service but some degree of a tip should be left because you did receive the service regardless of it's excellence. Servers are paid small hourly wages because people are supposed to be tipping their servers. So stop being obtuse and telling hardworking servers to get a different job. (For the record, I am not a server.)

I don't tip either for bad service. A long time ago my friend and I at lunch when to a restaurant. All we asked for was water and salad. We had to get our own salad from the salad bar. We never left a tip because all the waitress did was bring the check. A few weeks later the manager came to us saying the waitresses said we don't leave tips. We gave our reason. He said we weren't welcome back. My friend and I wrote a letter to their corporate office stating what happened. We received a letter in the mail with an appoligy with a statement saying dinner is on them with no limit. We went of course. And we did leave a tip since we got service. So, no service. No tip. I know there are creeps out there, even if you work your butt off that don't leave tips. Find a better restaurant with better clientele.

People know. I don't know what kind of guests you have at your place but perhaps you should look into a different restaurant if it is that common there. It's not like that everywhere.

What you have to realize most people make 30k-50k a year in the US if a person leaves you 10% that is enough some people don't leave waiters nothing it may not be what you want so be grateful that customers left you something. I wish I got a 10% tip.

I have no problem tipping for service but I live in a state where waiters get minimum wage for the job they do. Not some bullshit $3 an hour with tips expected to count as your earnings. This way a cheap customer does not effect your hourly wages. And then people can actually make a decent living doing a quality job and giving quality service. It's a win win situation.

I so feel you, I'd be happy with 15% and I have to tip out two percent of my sales. I just don't like less than 12% cause then I have to tip out to the bar. 20% would be ideal. I give awesome service, but everyone needs to know that if you do have good service, then you should tip 15% IF my tables bill is 50 bucks and they only leave five, that only leaves me with four after I tip the bar, this really sucks cause I did a lot for them and I really rely on those tips then its only like 8%. People don't understand how hard it is to be a server. It takes a real talent. Yes I did choose my job but you should still tip if someone is waiting on you, you cheap bastards.lol.

Krizzle, you need to re-read. Comparing a restaurant to a cafeteria doesn't even make sense either.

That makes me mad when people don't tip. It's just common courtesy to tip at least 15 % it is your job and if the customers were in your position, they would want to be tipped. Could you imagine if people at their jobs weren't putting in 100% of all the effort all of the time and their boss docked their pay b/c of it? Sometimes servers have bad days but that doesn't mean you just don't tip at all. And if they do a good job, leave them even a little extra.

Tipping is customary, but by no means required. If a person receives excellent service, the tip should reflect their efforts. By the same token, poor service should not be rewarded. The standard is 15% or higher for excellent service. If service was mediocre or poor, expect 10% or less. If you are a good server and routinely get stiffed then it's probably the clientele. Only you truely know if you need to step up your game.

Wow. I leave a penny if the service sucks.that way it is clear that I did not forget to tip! Servers earn their tips!!! Poor service....poor tips!

Imn. No. If that were the case the menu would say here is the price for the food and here is the price for the service. If you don't want the service you can serve yourself. Like a cafeteria do you tip the serving lady?? Tips are based on performance. People choose that job. By the way I tip 30% if I am comfortable.

Maybe you aren't a good server. I don't tip when I get crappy service.

I to 15 when the service sucks or is mediocre and 20 when it's good. When a waiter-tress is too friendly or tries to be your friend the tip goes back down to 15. Nothin I hate more than a waiter/tress who loves their job so much that they gotta be all up in my biz when they should just be serving food

I tip only if service was exceptional. No one tips me at my job so I shouldn't have to tip you because you chose a job that makes $4.00 an hour. I'm not trying to be an asshole but it's true. If you do a great job and don't get a tip, then I feel you got the shit end of the stick. However, if you're lazy etc. You don't deserve shit.
