Is it normal there's a massive island of plastic in the ocean?

Is it?
I think it's really gross.

No, it's not normal. It's not normal AT ALL.

Sadly, what is normal is that it piques our interest for six seconds, we shrug, and then go back to reading about a celebrity couple that have split up.

Recycling is big here in California, hell, with all of the hobos around, you can throw all of your recyclables in the garbage anyway, they will do it all for you!

Thank gosh for hobos. Where I (really) live, there's a lot of people who scrounge in trashcans and stuff to look for cans to sell.

        Signed,

i think the reason why is it doesnt get that much attention is that

      they barely show it and

its in the middle of nowhere for no one to see the real mess and

that its inevitable to stop it.

its sad but inevitable because of extreme consumerism and huge huge huge population and huge huge huge factories and industries.

I'd like to see a real aerial photograph instead of this sort of picture. A diagram isn't good for much, but a real life photograph might jerk a few tears and enrage a few earth-huggers. Of which, I am sort of one. I like my clean dirt, water, and air. ><'

This is what it looks like. In places it is thirty feet deep and some estimates say that the Pacific garbage patch covers an area twice the size of the United States (this is, admittedly, the high estimate. Some estimates put patches just a little larger than Texas). There are five of them, though, not just two.

The fact that humans can sleep at night with that abomination sitting in the oceans shows that we, in general, don't give a stuff about anything. If it weren't for the ocean currents keeping this stuff away from the coast, it would be piled up so deep against our beaches and harbours that there wouldn't be a single place on dry land where you could see the ocean (not even from a skyscraper).

    • This was the only picture I could find that was viewable within the constraints of the small size for photos on an IIN story.

I am sorry it did not meet your expectations. I did my best.

I did not know there were picture constraints. :/

I am not sure what kind of answers you are looking for.

It's there. I don't like it. Is that what you wanted to hear?

    Tee hee hee… rubbish.

Technically, I don't think it's a "giant island", more like two very, very large areas with a higher concentration of rubbish than the rest of the ocean. It's a misconception that there's a literal island of crap in the middle of the sea.

However, I agree that even that is extremely crappy and even that is extremely not normal.

One day, someone will try to sell us "valuable beach front real estate on the tranquil isle of Plastictania". Just don't forget to burp it when you seal the lid.

Why are some people so inhuman. Are they trying to kill us?! If they kill the poor seacreatures, we're next! WERE ALL GONNA DIE Y'ALL!!!

Was this from the Japanese earthquake?

As far as I know, the rubbish patch isn't actually visible because most of the plastic is broken down into smaller polymers before it gets there. But even if we can't see it, it still is a huge hazard to the local animals the general cleanness of the water.

It's normal if you're a member of Gorillaz.... except it needs to be at Point Nemo.

It's worrying, but a real photo would gain more reactions.

Oh, and am I the only one who sees a pair of eyebrows and eyes?

With house prices in the UK through the roof, I might just go claim one of these plastic islands for my own!

Come join me in Plastic City as a fellow Plastinite! We'll run and dance and kiss and hug and roll around on melted credit cards!

There is allot of plastic in the ocean, but Thats not the only form of pollution. There isn't a large island of plastic, If there was I'd imagine that allot of environmentalists would be extremely upset.
