Is it normal that toothpaste hurts my mouth?

Ok, Im a woman who has experienced this since I was a toddler. I find it difficult to nearly impossible to brush my teeth because the taste of toothpaste is so strong that my mouth burns. My teeth are still clean because I force myself to do it but it is really painful. I know that toothpaste is supposed to taste minty but when I try to brush my teeth, I start to drool uncontrollably, and gag because the toothpaste is so powerful. I use normal brands and have tried even childrens brands but nothing helps. I know it is not an allergic reaction because I have been tested for allergies and It does not linger after I rinse out my mouth. Why does toothpaste taste so overbearingly strong!?!?

OH MY GOD! I have the same exact problem! I still use Kid's Crest Sparkle Fun because it is the only toothpaste that won't make my gums, teeth, and tongue burn. All of my symptoms are exactly as you described, gagging, drooling, rinsing to get rid of the burn... The only difference is that the kid's toothpaste is fine for me. I always thought it was because I just wasn't use to the minty flavor 'cause I always used the Kid's stuff. But now my stepmom thinks it's an allergy, but I don't think so. I'm doing research to see if any of the ingredients of the other kinds of toothpaste mean anything. I've tried Tom's and Burt's Bees, but even when I inhale the minty scent, my throat dries up and I cough. Maybe it's just an allergy to Mint...? But I'm so glad that I've found someone who has the same problem as me!

This person says they have tried Children's toothpaste which doesn't make a difference. Children's toothpaste, from what I remember, tastes sweeter and fruitier then other 'adult' toothpastes. I think there seems to be something going on with your gums. Or maybe your palate is overly sensitive. I would talk to three dentists and see what they say. Get THREE dentists opinions!

I just went to the dentist and she checked my gums and said they were strong and healthy. My teeth were fine too...no enamel problems. She was stumped :/ Thanks for your advice, maybe my gp will have a better idea..

    It could be fissures.

I have this, but it's not really with toothpaste.

I get it with food, cold tap water, vitamins, Cat's Claw, Agave syrup.

It really hurts, but I haven't been getting it as often lately. I've been eating more vegetables and I guess drinking a bit more. So, it could've been a lack of nutrition.

Try a natural toothpaste, like Tom's of Maine.

Cinnamon and Mint are strong flavours. If you're using the commercial brands, then they put in artificial ingredients. So, whatever kind of chemical they are using for those flavours is most likely causing the main problem. They also use artificial sweeteners like aspartame or sucrolose and those cause a bunch of issues on their own.

I wish you good luck, though:)

Its not my teeth that feel pain, its my tongue and the rest of my mouth. And it doesnt hurt "just a bit". It burns to the point where I will start to tear up and gag. I will try going to a health food store and looking for something like Toms of maine. Thanks for the advice!

It's not normal but it's nothing to worry about.. you could try Sensodyne if the problem is sensitivity (I have very sensitive teeth and it works well) or you could even try fruity toothpaste and see if that makes a difference.

    Use sensodyne ....

or yes, make your own toothpaste out of baking soda & hydrogen peroxide. The dentist we use to go to as a child use to do that... use to make his own for himself and his family
