Is it normal that this bugs me so much?

I'm a Wiccan, and it really pisses me off to see people wearing pentacles when they aren't Wiccan. I usually give people the benefit of the doubt, but there is one guy I know who wears a pentacle and is not Wiccan. I don't wear symbols of any other religion, and it seems really disrespectful when people wear a symbol of my religion as a fashion statement without even trying to understand Wicca or thinking it is something evil.

I'm not religious but I understand your problem with this. You do have to realise it's your problem, though, not theirs. I'd be completely ignorant about Wicca had I not got chatting to Wiccans and I could easily have overstepped the bounds without knowing it.

Symbology is important but it's important in different ways to different people. For instance, I think if Jesus was reborn, he'd be horrified to see people wearing crosses around their necks. It's almost taunting him about the way he died. But Christians no doubt see this differently.

What you believe is important, but you have to let others have freedom too, even if what they do is ignorant of your faith.

  • I find it disrespectful when they put religious symbols (such as a buddha's head) on stuff like bikini.

I know that pentagrams and pentacles are not solely Wiccan, and I normally give people the benefit of the doubt. It's when people think that it represents something evil and they're wearing it to try to make people think they're so hardcore. There was a boy in several of my classes last year who drew pentagrams and 666 on his hands and would randomly yell out "Hail Satan!" just to try to get a rise our of teachers. He only changed the symbol to an inverted pentagram after I told him for several days straight that doing that was insulting enough, but doing that with a plain pentagram was that much more insulting and made him look really idiotic.

I do try to talk to people who wear pentacles incase they are Wiccan, but when they aren't, I don't automatically get defensive. I normally ask why they're wearing it, and do try to have a pleasant conversation. It's only when they don't care and get rude about it that I start to get really ticked off.

I can see your point. All I would say is just politely let him know that he's wearing a religious symbol. Maybe he's completely unaware? I've only met one Wiccan in my life and admittedly know very little of your beliefs. I agree with dappled. I'm a Mormon and have never really understood why other Christians wear crosses...

Wiccans celebrate Yule instead of Christmas, and Oster instead of Easter.

The pentacle is a sacred symbol of the mind body connection/balance/harmony. It is found in nature (starfish, flowers)and in the heavens (orbit of Venus). The five points: fire, water, earth, air, and spirit/source/light/god/it. It does not belong to one religion, it belongs to us all. I understand your frustration with ignorance, especially when people think of it as dark and evil or fail to recognize the deeper meaning it has for some people. Don't let it upset you too much my friend, people are waking up. I promise.

The pentacle and pentagram (as well as crone, maiden and whatever other sign) are hardly exclusive to Wicca or paganism. While these symbols have strong meanings and daily use in Wicca, they aren't truly 'made for wicca', there general symbols that have been adopted.
You see a triangle, but that isn't ''The Freemason Symbol'' it's just a symbol they use, the symbol Cross is different from the Christian cross, which they've adapted (by raising the horizontal bar a hit) to suit them. Anyone can wear a symbol, anyone can assume things.
I'm going to start wearing an ampersand: take note, they all now mean my name. :D

Omg! I completely understand, because that pisses me off... It's like if I wore a cross, or something else that other religions are proud to have as their symbol, when i do not believe what they believe or have the same moral code. And sometimes those people just think they're being cool and are now witches, or warlocks, but it's not what being wicca is about. We don't wear their symbols, out of respect for them. For me, my pentacle reminds me of who I am, what I believe to be right, and how I choose to live my life. If people don't respect that, I find it rude.

Well, the earliest use of a swastika was in ancient Babylon. Also the reason the swastika was used by the Nazis was because the Native Americans used it as a symbol of luck. Unfortunately they choose the bad luck Swastika.

Also, when I was a Christian, I didn't wear a cross for the same reason that dappled mentioned.

I was raised Lutheran, and my parents still celebrate Christmas, so I do participate in the gift giving aspect. For Easter, I have a nice dinner with my family. But there are Wiccan holidays that are near those Christian holidays, so I just sort of delay my big celebration for a little bit in order to be able to celebrate with my family. My family, who aren't Wiccan, will also celebrate Wiccan holidays with me to support my beliefs.

But in my opinion, that's a little different. I mean, I was raised as a Christian so I both understand and respect the beliefs and traditions. People who wear a pentagram as just a fashion statement usually don't understand or respect Wiccan beliefs, and don't really have much interest in learning about Wiccan beliefs or respecting them. At least, that has been my experience with the people I've talked to.
