Is it normal that things are awkward between me and my female friend?

I haven't known her for very long. She's quite pretty but I've no intention of chasing after her, I'm really enjoying the friendship we've formed so quickly. I usually don't get along with people so well, especially when we dont share alot in common, and especially women, but me and her are getting along great! She's also admitted to being social awkward and anxious around people and it shows. So with those points in mind my question is, is it normal for conversation to be kind of awkward between us? I really like her and don't want this friendship to fade away because of my socialising problems. Everytime we talk there are awkward gaps in the conversation where neither of us knows what to say so we frantically search for a new topic. When we do have a topic we'll be laughing away! So, is this normal? Do friends last like this or am I doomed to slowly lose contact due to our combined awkwardness and inability to make approaches?

    Sounds like a good friendship after all, though. I wouldn't consider it awkward since you both have things to deal with. When there's nothing to talk about, talk about not having anything to talk about. Ask her if she feels like is awkward at times.

      Haha, ya I've done that! We both laughed for a minute and went silent again! There seems to be no quick cure for the socially awkward!

    I think you just need to relax, you should feel comfortable with your friends. Me and my friends can just sit in silence for ages, and it's not awkward, it's comfortable. There's never a need to talk with us.

    Try to stop worrying and just chill, enjoy the silences. It just seems like you're trying too hard.

      I consider her a friend but we really haven't known each other very long which adds to the awkwardness. I imagine it wouldn't be so awkward to be silent if I knew her longer.
      But ya, I suppose we're both just rushing it a bit. There's a bit of a spark when we talk even if its not a similar interest so I guess we shoot through topics too fast, haha!
