It's easy to offend someone, and when you need votes you're cautious about your actions. However, from what I've seen and read about recent political news, they don't really care anymore about the people.

If I said what I wanted to, someone would track me down and shoot me.

    • So much for "freedom of speech".

My country has laws regarding 'hate speech'.
You'll get arrested if you offend the wrong people.

But since the people likely to be offended by what I say are hateful themselves, they'd rather track me down and kill me instead.

If I say what I want them to fix, and how they should go about fixing it, I'll probably get a fair share of hate on this site and if they ever find out about it, I'll be a marked man.

I'll take a chance and say just this much...
...Politicians don't fix the real problems in my country because they'd rather pocket the money required to do so than to actually use it to take care of their people.

To answer your questions of which problems should be fixed and which group would be offended: The people.

Politicians aren't afraid of being offensive, they're afraid of losing votes.

On one hand, blame political correctness and on the other sometimes the only thing they care about is themselves and their "people".

Yes and lose votes. It's exactly what they do, regular people do it all the time to, and it sickens my nostrils.

I think they don't fix problems because they often can't. Let's say you have $1m and you have an environment which will become toxic unless you give it $1m, a hospital where everyone will die unless you give it $1m, an economy which will fail unless you give it $1m, a schooling system that will fail unless you give it $1m, and armed forces that are too ill-equipped to defend the country unless you give them $1m.

Pick one of those and then consider the other four failures (which you now "caused"). Consider being blamed for them, and consider what people may say about you. I never thought I'd defend politicians but this is one of the reasons they don't answer questions with a straight bat. It would be bad enough to deal with this alone but most political parties have an opposing party, criticising their every move and looking for them to trip up.

They also have the media ready to pounce on anything that doesn't stick to the script and from whatever side of politics you come from, there's always going to about a third of the people who will think no matter what you do it is the *worst* *thing* *in* *the* *world* *ever!*.

Makes you wonder why anyone would actually want to be a politician, doesn't it?

Pretty much hit the nail right on the head as far as my opinion goes.

I agree with dappled, they do as much as they can to keep our government system up and running smoothly. You have to consider the cost of maintaining the socials structure, schools, military, roads, etc... that we take for granted until it goes bad! They make X amount in taxes every year (which we piss and moan about) and they pay 10X to keep everything running. Try and be a little tolerant of the people that have kept everything up and running this far!

    Lesson for today kids -tolerance-
