Is it normal that the rainbow symbol is used by homosexuals?

The rainbow is a very beautiful natural phenomenon that occurs under specific conditions.
Homosexuals have usurped this symbol to represent their own viewpoint.
There are many religious beliefs or mythologies surrounding this phenomenon.
Is it normal that homosexuals should be allowed to use this symbol as their exclusive domain?

The rainbow was already pretty gay to begin with.

I didn't know that Homosexuals using the rainbow prevents you from using it in your own way.

Many people will make an assumption or jump to a conclusion that you are a homosexual (or a homosexual group) if you use this symbol. This can be very detrimental in many aspects of life.

      • If someone assumes I'm gay because I use the rainbow in some fashion and then refuses to hang out with me because of their wrong assumption then so be it. If they are so intollerant of others I don't want them in my life.

You may be the one jumping to conclusions or assumptions about other people. If I see someone wearing a rainbow I assume they're wearing a rainbow. If I see someone who falls in love with members of the same sex , then I assume they're gay.

It's not "their exclusive domain". Rainbows are used all over the place to represent a loads of different things. Are you really trying to say that you've never seen a rainbow used as anything other than a gay pide symbol? Fuck you talking about.

True, rainbows have been used to represent many other things. It does however, in my opinion, carry a stigmatization because (in my opinion, short-sightedly) it has been adopted to represent a particular sexual orientation that is a fringe element in society. Try wearing an outfit with a rainbow symbol to a job interview or using this symbol in a business venture, for instance.
Nowhere did I say that the rainbow is a symbol for "gay pride", yet you came to that conclusion.

If you go dressed to a job interview dressed as a rainbow then being mistaken for being gay is probably the least of your problems.

I really don't see how they "usurped" the rainbow. I'm guessing it represents the variety of people today.

But besides that, I really don't care. I'll wear multiple colors if it suits me. Just like I don't assume everyone wearing a blue & yellow t-shirt is a WVU fan. There's still plenty of clothing with rainbows. They didn't "corner the market" so don't fret.

    I agree, kinda stole it.

Probably a bad idea, now some otherwise normal parents really get on their kids when they bring home a rainbow finger painting from school-if they weren't homophobic before, they are now!! How many kids now cannot draw rainbows because of this? Sad.

Plus it sucks for any business that formerly had good sales of non-gay rainbow items. Maybe that's part of the reason the economy is in the dumps. Skittles seemed to roll with it pretty well though....

If only we could convince some despicable group like the Klan to temporarily take on the rainbow so the gays would drop it, then we can have it back.

Or just have bumper stickers printed up with a rainbow, that say 'Reclaim the Rainbow'.

Isn't it funny though that the gays took the rainbow, which is usually seen curved, and then made it straight....hmmm....

I frown on gangs using colors as their "symbol" (like red and blue). Gay people using the rainbow to symbolize their culture and proudness of being flamboyant and gay isnt hurting anybody. They are not going around shooting one another. However gangs are shoot and kill innocent people everyday just for wearing the wrong color! Why dont you sheep focus on the REAL problem.

True, being flamboyant and gay isn't hurting anyone, but a prominent homosexual activity does. Anal sex is a prime vector for HIV/AIDS infections that kills millions of people every year and costs billions of dollars in health expenditures.

One Love. We are but humans regardless of the specifics of our experience. We all need water, food and air to thrive. We all bleed when our skin gets punctured. We all cry "help' when we really need it. We all have the built in desire to live.

I have no body art and likely never will. I have never placed a bumper sticker on my vehicle and likely never will. Never felt the need to broadcast my spirituality, sexually, race, creed, political affiliation or anything other than my humanity.

Live and let live so long as they don't try to stomp you or your neighbor.

Certain groups have to have something that symbolizes them. I'm bisexual and I like the "rainbow", but I don't really care in a sense. They could've picked a dinosaur or a Phoenix for the flag and I still wouldn't have minded. However, I am now worried that If I wore rainbows that people might think that I'm gay, which I am not. I don't want to be judged because of the colors/patterns I choose to wear:/ I think anyone that wears rainbows might be labeled/judged as being something they're possibly not. It's like the Swastika. It originally was a buddhist symbol, but Hitler took it. Ironic isn't it? Anyway, it's now sadly seen as a symbol of evil and hate. A far cry from it's original meaning. Anyone who wears it, even if they wear it for the original meaning, will be labeled as a racist.

Gilgamesh... The hero from Sumerian legend or history. I really think the Sumerians were of universal origins. If you look at the features and drawing of their artifacts. The same goes with the Egyptians.

Gilgamesh was the fifth king of Uruk (Sumerian) in ancient Mesopotamia ca. 2500 BC. He wrote the Epic of Gilgamesh, which is among the oldest surviving literature known. It is a poem, part of which explains a rainbow as the necklace of Ishtar. There is also a reference to 'the great flood' as a remembrance.

uh I know who gilgamesh is. he is the first epic hero. and he absolutely did not write his own epic poem. which in fact is thee oldest poem, or piece of literature. it was written waay past his reign.

i don't recall the epic referencing a rainbow.

Oh yea, just look what happened with the swastika. It was once a beautiful symbol used for luck and well-being. Then there was Hitler. Now all these gays are literally stealing from our sky and every time we see a rainbow up there we'll know THE GAYS ARE AFTER US! WHEN WILL IT END? Yea, symbol is just symbol. Seriously though, one day our future generations will look back us for our thing against gay people the same way we look at generations before us for the unfair treatment of black people.

I'm not gay and don't know the reason a rainbow was chosen, but it seems to be sending the message that being gay is natural. Also, that it's colorful and vibrant.

You can see that two ways. You can appreciate it for what it is or you can choose to believe that it's been stolen from straight people by marauding gays.

If you believe the latter and can honestly say, "Gay people have stolen our rainbows" and mean it, you deserve to be ridiculed.

Ah, but what if you lived back in the mid 1800's and loved to wear white pointed hoods with little eye holes cut out? Then a few years later the KKK comes and ruins it for you!! 140 years later and you STILL can't pull off the pointy hood!!

Point is, you can't go around wearing a white pointy hood without people assuming you are a KKK member, and having to deal with the repercussions of those assumptions. People are reluctant to have anything to do with a rainbow for fear either someone might wrongly assume they're gay or perpetrate some kind of hate/violence/vandalism upon their person or property. I used a negative example, but it's a good illustration-'I am not a member of that group, and I don't want to be confused as one, for good OR bad'

The OP's argument is not without merit. Part of my first post on the topic was in jest, but I do see what the OP is saying and I do tend to agree.

This actually kind of happened to me.
My sister offered to make a Pikmin hat for me, but refused when I asked for a white one because "it would look too much like a K.K.K. hat".
Such a shame, white pikmin are adorable. :<

Funnily enough, I think we have pretty similar views here. You understood what I was getting at.

It would be easy to argue that people shouldn't wear pointy hoods because of what it has come to mean (something negative).

But it's also a valid argument to ask why people should think being gay should be treated in the same way as being racist.
