Is it normal that the indians should develop a strong military?

Hi, i am an american staying in India for a month now. To be frank I am disgusted by the way in which the Indians are making themselves capable in which we the Americans usually have a supremacy. They already have a mars mission. I mean why the hell they need the mars mission, cant they leave the NASA for it.And why the hell they need an advanced military for.Surely they can request the U.S. government and the all time strong U.S. military can provide protection to the Indian people.

    Why would they need a strong military? They've got the bomb. They can just nuke their enemies and not risk a single soldier's life.

    National hubris. America is a truly irritating country at an international level, but has an image of being internally successful. India should look at return on investment of various types of infrastructure. This would cause the Indian GDP to rise at an accelerated rate. Only a quick response coastal navy is needed to blast pirates.

    I have reasons to believe that they do have very powerful military.
    Go check out Indian military history. They have one of those so called blue water navies.

    My only question is why they need it?
