Is it normal that sometimes i can control my dreams?

Every once in a while, like once a month or maybe a little less I'll have these dreams. I'll realize that I'm dreaming, and then I'll be like "YESSSSS I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT!!!" And then I'll run to Antarctica or go kiss the girl I love. Are these normal? Where you realize you're dreaming so you do whatever you want?

    Yes, it's called lucid dreaming.

I can only control them a little just before I wake up.

Do you play video games? I read it makes lucid dreaming easier.

Happened numerous times in my life, none were induced or prepared for, they just happen.

Flying was easy.. required nothing more than the thought of doing it, though it took a moment to get over the notion that I was doing it.. strange thing though, every time that happens, some other 'voice' behind me gives a warning to avoid going near powerlines. Strange that should happen.. why would I 'dream' that? Typically I can stay 'locked in' to the event ok, making conscience effort to take in details of my surroundings, but at some point that same voice will state its time to go back, at which point I wake up.

On the downside, these experiences require a huge amount of personal energy. I find myself exhausted for the next couple days afterwards. I'm well educated and also served in Army special operations units, so I consider myself to be well grounded in reality. I dont believe for a moment these experiences are 'only in the head'. Its just too real.. Neither do they occur as a result of some chemical or alcohol intake, I dont drink or do drugs. A very vivid experience indeed...

They're known as Lucid dreams. They aren't all that common, but happen from time to time. A quick search on Google can give you a more detailed explanation.

I've done it a few times too, it's incredible. It's called lucid dreaming and you're right, it does happen when you realize that you're dreaming. There's a few tips to help induce this. A good one is keeping a dream journal, to help spot patterns, like if you frequently dream about birds, you might recognize the fact your dreaming by spotting birds. Also, whilst you're awake, try reading things like sign posts when you pass them, if you make this a habit, you might do it in a dream, and in a dream, the words won't make any sense, so you'll be able to tell that you're dreaming. :)

It's only happened to me a couple times where I've actually realized I was dreaming and been able to do 'whatever I wanted.' However, I've always had very active dreams and been able to control my dreams to an extent, even though I wasn't aware it was a dream. I can generally change the course of my dreams and make things appear or disappear or alter myself or others. Probably the most useful 'ability' I had in my dreams when I was younger was to be able to wake myself up if I was in a nightmare. I seemed to always know the nightmares weren't real, but I obviously didn't want to stick around in those! I think it's fascinating how people experience their dreams in different ways.
