Is it normal that some people hate to drink water

So I've noticed that one of my friends (and some other people, just not as badly as him) never, ever drinks water, he hates it. He refuses to drink it, ever. He will seriously drink alcohol during school in the place of the water he so strongly dislikes. Seriously? How? Just how can you hate drinking water? Is it normal for people to hate water? (and on a side note, anyone who happens to have the same problem, stop. You need water, water is freaking liquid LIFE)

I HATE water. I actually might have an explanation for it though - I have a vomiting phobia (emetophobia) and whenever I had a stomach virus, all I could keep down was water (and 7 up/Sprite, needless to say I don't drink those anymore either). So my brain associates the taste of those drinks with being sick, and now I find them disgusting.

I still drink water, but I find it gross and I will only drink it when I get too thirsty. My drink of choice is chocolate almond milk. (It used to be pineapple-coconut juice but that was dehydrating me due to the insanely copious amounts of it I was drinking.)

Water is not only essential, I love it, esp filtered water - not bought, tap water through a filter jug. I never go anywhere without a bottle of it handy.

I got into the habit while living in the desert

It makes sense from a biological perspective. Water has no calories and no nutrients. Therefore, the only reason to drink it is to maintain your existence. If you could somehow still drink water whilst intaking energy and nutrients, would that not be a wonder? As it so happens, in this calorie ubiquitous future, such beverages exist. Think juice, milk, soda, etc. All of these beverages hydrate you whilst supplying your body with calories (energy for survival) and nutrients (to maintain our bodily funtions). Some have more nutrients than others, but all have more nutrients than water.

So, because these nutrients aid in survival, our bodies have evolved a way to reward us when when we imbibe these foods or drinks. This is why we taste sweetness and why we enjoy it. Sweetness is typically indicative of sugar and sugar is calorie dense. Therefore, we like sweetness.

Before the agricultural revolution (Paleolithic era), this trait would have been helpful in motivating humans to look for berries and what not. Today, in developed nations, this trait is a hindrance. Our bodies don't recognize that we aren't living in a time when food is scarce. Despite, having already taken in a sufficient amount of nutrients, our bodies tell us to keep eating these things which taste delicious. It is telling you to take in enough calories to last until the next time you hunt or gather berries, which could be days.

Anyway, yes, it is normal for a body to opt for the more nutrient dense of two options.

This doesn't apply to people who live in the country where water tastes amazing. I never drink tap water in the city either. It tastes like pool water because I'm not at all accustomed to the chlorine. Your friends need to try well water! It tastes better than bottled because the natural minerals are more balanced. Bottled water tastes kind of bitter whereas well water usually tastes, depending on the source, like "nothing", which is a very refreshing attribute.

It's so painstakingly bland that I'd understand why he hates it. It seems like it's kind of pointless. There's water in basically everything so you don't need to drink plain water to survive.

It's understandable, but maybe a little irrational too.
