Is it normal that society makes assumptions on affection?

Society overreacts in regards to people showing affection. For instance, let's you are one sex and you show affection towards the opposite sex, people will then assume that there's something going between you too, even though there might be. Let's say that you show affection towards the same sex. Anyone who sees you will then be quick to assume that you and this other person are have a gay affair. And so on. Is this normal?

  • It's because sometimes certain shows of affection aren't the norm while being the norm in other types of people.

For example, a male friend kissing another male friend, be it on the cheek and so on, is not something male friends do that is the norm. It is, however, the norm for two gay men in a couple to do, therefor an assumption comes up.

  • Society will always, always judge. No way to prevent it, no way to get around it, just accept it and move on.

Sometimes this is only because we the people are a stupid bunch who tend to think it's funny/amusing to speculate on the relations between others, knowing deep down that it doesn't really matter at all.

So what? Why does is matter what other people aer thinking, especially people you aren't in direct contact with? Even if they did think you were gay, is that terribly bad thing? If you were hanging out with a member of the opposite sex and others assumed you were a couple, even though you are just good friends, would that offend you?
