Is it normal that smoking helps me not cough?

It seems really weird and my friends think im crazy. But when i get a bad cold with the horrible hacking cough i found that when i smoke a cig i stop coughing. I'll be coughing my lungs up for hours, medicine doesnt help, cough drops dont work, i have a cig and instantly i stop coughing! I thought smoke would irritate my throat more? Has this happened to anyone else? I dont have any health probs, im not addicted to cigs, and this has happened the last 4 times ive been sick in a 2 yr period.

Yep, cigarette smoke is an irritant and the body produces phlegm to counteract it. When you've got a cough, this lubrication actually helps.

The downside is your body becomes used to produced less phlegm naturally and if you stop smoking, there's a period of a couple of months where you won't have enough phlegm and will be really prone to contracting respiratory illnesses. Many asthmatic smokers have a precautionary flu shot whenever they try to give up smoking.

Coating the cillia in your lungs may be a temporary fix but long term causes great bodily harm

That will change with time if you smoke regularly.
