Is it normal that people prevent suicide?

Why do people feel the need to stop others from killing themselves?

I think, if someone wants to die, we should respect that and let him go with some dignity, instead of trying to talk him out of it and forcing him to live on, even if he doesn't want to.

If someone wants it over, so be it - just stop patronizing suiciders and let them make their own decisions.

Am I wrong? Should people prevent suicide?

  • Its because often people are just in a bad state of mind and will be glad to be alive later on.

I realize there are people who never get over it but most do.

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

You can't really "force" anyone to live. If you were able to dissuade them it means they were open to be given hope.

I like this a lot. People who considered suicide but were able to be persuaded have to take the credit themselves for being open to hope :)

I usually think the attempts and decision are very much a way of opening one's self up for help for the last time, especially if it's announced in some way. I'm reminded of a man on the Golden Gate bridge (I forget his name right now) who was spotted by a police officer. They talked for a while and he didn't jump. There are hundreds of stories like this. I just remember this one in particular because they reunited years later year and it was in the news not too long ago.

Here's my view on the matter: If someone doesn't want to continue living or their life quality is poor and/or dimishing, then they should have every right to kill themselves or ask someone to kill them. This is why Human Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide should be legal. No one should be forced to continue living if they don't want to. Sometimes, it's better to just let people go then let them suffer further. For many, suicide is the only way to escape a cruddy life or finally reach peace. Why would someone who's anti-suicide ever want to condemn someone else from that? To force someone to continue living when they don't want to is inhumane in my eyes because it's not the anti-suicider's life nor decision. It's the person who is comtemplating suicide's decision.

This is so stupid, I don't even feel like explaining it to you.

Let them off themselves. Dont be selfish pricks and make them live miserable lives in mental institutions.

Since if you tell them not to kill themselves you can say later that you did not push them too suicide. So the police cant arrest you for NOT encouraging them to kill themselves. Since now if you push someone to suicide its a crime. No one wants to get arrested for that even if they really want the person to kill themselves.

I was suicidal and I am SOOOOOOOO glad to be alive!!! I know this isn't always the case, but when it comes to suicide, I always think it's best to prevent. They can always try to kill themselves again later, but if you let them kill themselves now, they'll never have to chance to change their minds.
I also believe euthanasia should be legal in certain cases, and that's basically assisted suicide. Here's the breakdown.
Let's say you're over thirty-five, since that seems like a good, solid, stable, adult age, and in that whole long time you have found no reason to live. I'm, sorry for you, but you had a decent run of it, so sure, you can opt out of life.
Let's say you're over thirty-five and terminally ill. Suffering. Not a lot of hope for recovery. I'm sorry for you, really, but I understand that.
Over thirty-five and your spouse/child/best friend/parent died, and you have no one else to live for? Again, I'm sorry, but I understand.
It's when young people, such as teens and twenty-somethings, try to kill themselves that I will unequivocally intervene. And I have, several times. So far, my friends have all been glad that I kept them from making an impulsive and irreversible decision. We can talk about it again when we're old and sick.
    Live long and prosper.

Because, if I ever let a person kill themselves, then I would be wrecked with guilt because I would feel like I basically murdered them.

I suffer from depression and I have been suicidal before,
I've thought about ways to kill myself, such as overdose on medicine, or hang myself.

However, I never went through with it, I was too scared or weak to do it.

Now, I'm glad that I didn't kill myself back then,
I would of missed so much happiness and good times.
Sure, life isn't always fun or happy, and it can be a real bitch, but you know what? I think people are stronger if they just go through with it instead of taking the easy way out.
