Is it normal that people are so ignorant about gender?

Well I recently saw this thread on is it normal http://isitnormal.com/story/is-it-normal-to-be-pissed-about-this-pregnant-man-137695/

The poster and the commenters appeared woefully ignorant on the subject of gender to the point of being downright offensive. This inspired me to try to educate the is it normal community on the subject.

The community here is normally great and helps people solve problems. Thus I do not believe that so many people, including NeuroNeptunian whom I respect, were purposefully being such bigots.

Society has a very simplified view of gender. In most peoples eyes someone is either male or female and should conform to that gender in terms of looks, behavior and in some cases even sexual preference. This view is extremely flawed. While the majority of people are gender conforming, gender itself is far from simple.

http://tinyurl.com/genderbreadman (http://preview.tinyurl.com/genderbreadman).

This image (though still a simplification) demonstrates the concept of gender much better than the normal society model. It effectively splits gender into 4 different scales. These are biological sex (someone's chromosomes - XX or XY or another combination - what they are born as), gender identity (how someone views themselves in their brain, this is the gender someone feels they are and that which they should be referred to as), gender expression (how someone dresses and acts, this could be in a masculine or feminine way or a mix of the two, or neither) and sexuality (straight, gay, bi or asexual: any gender can be any of these).

I hope this has helped to clear up the confusion. If you dispute this or want more information, or simply want to discuss it, please post below.

TLDR: gender isn't a simple, single concept and doesn't always fall into one of two categories.

That's really amazing, considering that I'm agender.

What about hermaphrodites? It is not proper to assign a gender to them, but it is not polite to refer to them as an "it".
It is true that we do intercept most of these people at birth, and use corrective surgery (usually removing male parts) and hormone therapy.
Genetically though, they still retain male (or rarely female) attributes.

Ooh, I've always wondered how many people who had the surgery done at birth ended up having trouble with their gender identity later. I've seen in RP forums online when people's characters are hermaphrodites, they're referred to as Shi I think? Hir and Shi. But I think there should be better words than that. D:

      • Although grammatically incorrect, the pronoun "they" is increasingly used to refer to someone of undetermined or unknown gender from the point of view of the speaker. So I'd imagine that you could use "they" to refer to someone who isn't male or female.

Grammatically incorrect or not, it does sound a bit better. I'm a bit androgynous and for a while a few of my friends called me "it" but not because of the androgyny, just because we're really weird. I didn't really mind, I felt like being an it gave me more leeway to be silly. o.o

What a load a bullshit. Why are you overcomplicating such a simple thing? You're either born a male or you're born a female. There's nothing more to it! Fucking hell.

HAHAHAHAAHAHAH omg, looks like you need to take some grammar lessons. It's important to know the difference between knowing your shit. And know you're shit. Especially when you call someone an idiot but can't type a single sentence without a spelling mistake.

    • For most people yes! But occasionally you get weird chromosome ccombinations (XXY) or the level of androgen produced in the womb during brain development can go wrong leaving the brain as a different gender to the rest of the body. It's not simple.

        • Firstly where is the MSc from if you don't know what about XXY? Secondly did you actually study gender development at all in the course?

I agree so so so much with this. People like to believe things are concrete and simple, but nothing is ever simple, even gender. The sooner people realised that the better time they'll have dealing with it.

I like the gingerbread man (or woman really, depending) picture too. It's a good visual representation :)

I think part of the problem is that people often think that male/female is the same as masculine/ feminine. The concept of man/woman is vague. It doesn't tell you if you are defining someones sex organs, or if you are defining masculine traits.

But sometimes people just want a reason to be upset. I have a transgendered friend who makes it an issue in everything "they" do. I'm not allowed to assign a prononun to this person because they are offended by both terms he and she. The preferred term is a description of the scientific process. Really. Every conversation turns into a debate about gender identity. And I just wanted to know if "what's his face" was going to be at the bar later.

Not all are like this. But I do think this issue starts to cross the political correctness line. I am not trying to take away your identity.

    • I agree that political correctness can get tedious here. With any sort of identity issue, where someone reveals an aspect of themselves which is socially abnormal, they become a little insecure about it. This is normally just a phase until they realise it's not a big thing. Just give your friend time. If they have not grown out of it within a few months tell them that they're being a bit over the top about it and that they're making it out to be more of an issue than it is. In a way they're creating the perceived difference that they complain about.

On the subject of pronouns, while it is offensive to refer to a transsexual with the pronouns of the wrong gender, refusing either normal set of pronouns is just unnecessarily tedious and doesn't do any good for anyone. While Sweden may have made the sensible decision of introducing a third set of genderless pronouns to it's language, that doesn't exist in English so people have to choose a set of pronouns or accept both.

In the vast majority of cases, gender is obvious. However, there are those people born intersex. And there are those born of one gender, but want to express themselves as the other. If you happen to be one of those, please don't get angry if I refer to you by the wrong pronoun. I'm not trying to be mean. Sometimes I honestly don't know. And I really don't care what gender you want to be. Sorry if that sounds unsympathetic, but it's your issue, not mine.

I'll say what I said in chat.

I think gender is pretty simple. I see you, you look like description of (e.g.) woman, I call you woman. Only time it's anyone else's business is at the doctor and in the bedroom.

    There we are, everyone's happy.

    • So you define gender expression as "true" gender. This is valid and it's also how sexuality works, we are attracted to people of certain gender expressions.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one bothered by that. I actually abstained from commenting just because I didn't trust my feelings about what was said to get in the way of my comment. People are woefully ignorant when it comes to gender issues, but this could easily be fixed with better education. I didn't learn a lot of those terms and things I already kind of understood until college when I electively took a women's studies class.

I feel like there should be requirements, preferrably way back in high school to teach kids about things like this. Gender issues, multiculturalism, things like that. Or that it should at least be worked into the curriculum more so (talk about gender in health, world cultures, things like that) because a lot of primary schools don't have that.

Hell, a lot of primary schools won't even give you sex education XD
