Is it normal that people are jealous of my intelligence?

Ever since I can remember, I've been apparently 'gifted' with intelligence. Anything I want to learn, I learn quickly and remember easily. That does not, however, mean that I am doing well in all my school classes. My girlfriend in particular is jealous that I miss school frequently (which I am actually feeling very guilty for) and yet I still have an A to B average. I'm an all honors student, and these absences will eventually catch up to me (which is why I decided I won't miss school anymore), however my main point is "Is it normal that people are jealous of my intelligence?"

I really mean, is it normal that people are jealous that I don't have to work hard for what I get? I really don't ever bother with 100% effort, and even though it bothers me, I still get good grades. So, is it normal for people to be jealous of your grades if you don't try especially hard?

I'm really filled with stress and guilt regardless, so I'd love to hear other peoples thoughts on this. If you all don't mind, please post a paragraph or so, so I can have some food for thought. Thanks.

I am the same way. I wouldn't consider it normal, though. It's a gift, just like the gifts professional athletes or actors have.

  • Well how would you feel if you had to work really hard for something that was easy to another? It might not be jealousy so much as frustration.

Anyway, I agree with Jen - high school isn't that difficult so it wouldn't hurt to learn some study habits & be the best you can be in preparation for what lies ahead.

I've heard that post secondary can be really challenging for those labeled gifted, (but i'm not sure).

Don't be ashamed if you are smart. I'm not very smart I got my G.E.D which sucks. I completly hated school hated the majority of the people and hated the majority of the teachers but mainly laziness. Don't feel bad if others strive to do as you do but fail. Take it all in and be happy. The only thing is don't waste it. If you have a gift use it for the good of mankind. That's a big request but that's how it goes.

I never tried in high school and got A's and B's. I mean literally I don't remember ever really studying or trying hard at all. I didn't miss a lot of school, but I didn't sit enraptured, listening to my teachers either. I was totally preoccupied with other things. High school is easy. Don't get too ahead of yourself. Wait until college and like me, you'll discover it's a whole different ball game. Don't get me wrong; I'm sure you're very intelligent...but college is totally different than high school.

And yes, it's normal for people to be jealous. Of course people wish they had it as easy as you. But it's nothing you should feel guilty about. Just stay humble and you'll be fine.

  • Yeah, it's normal but it's nothing to be jealous of. I'm willing to bet most of the people who are jealous of you aren't very studious. Something like what you've got is nothing to be guilty for. Don't let anyone hold you back, even your girlfriend who's supposed to understand you. But make sure you attend school as often as you can, because it seems to me that you could have serious potential, don't let that go to waste.

I wish you the best luck.

  • I think any jealously people may feel over your situation is not, per se, normal; however, there could be some people jealous enough to openly resent you.
