Is it normal that party decorations give me anxiety attacks?

I hate hate hate party decorations. I hate seeing them. I hate the idea of them. It's the whole, "You're around party decorations! You MUST be happy!" thing. And then inevitably, something will go wrong, like at a children's birthday party and somebody starts crying and everything gets hectic. And then everyone's standing there dumbfounded and upset surrounded by happy colorful plates and streamers and napkins and hats and cake. OH MY GOD. I'm freaking out thinking about it right now!!

AND THEN, I REMEMBER ONE PARTICULAR YEAR MY MOM FORGOT ABOUT THIS, OR DIDN'T THINK IT WAS A BIG DEAL, AND HOLY GOD IT WAS THE WORST BIRTHDAY EVER. I kept it together the whole day and then by the end of it I completely lost it and made my mom upset. Oh god. Needless to say it didn't help.

IS THIS NORMAL??

Perhaps you should just avoid parties then. What you described happening is not the fault of the decorations..its YOUR feelings that are drudged up when you see them. You associate them with negativity.

Perhaps if it impacts your life so much you should go to some cognitive therapy.
