Is it normal that my wife doesnt know i was in a war?

I went to a war at 17 and never talk about it to my wife. She knows that i was in the army, but not that i was deployed. She has never asked me about it and ive never told her because i just dont want her to know for some reason.

Why do you not want her to know? That seems strange to me. It is not like it is an embarrassing secret or something to hide. In fact I am sure your wife would gain a new admiration for you if she knew, although she would certainly wonder why she hadn't known before.

She's your wife. She has the right to know. I don't see why you wouldn't tell her about this. It's all in the past. *Shrug*

    • Thats easy for you to say when you dont have the memories that i do. Im afraid that it will be brought up and i dont want to deal with it or talk about it. Look at it from my point of view. Ur right tho, she does have a right to know.

Can't you tell her and say that you don't want to talk about it in detail, since it was a shocking experience?

If the shit you saw bothers you then dont talk about it. thats one of your coping skills. And its a good one . i know the women on her will want you breaking down and crying or getting a period or somthing but the fact is you took the money.

She doesn't have a right to know at all. What are you on about?

while i do think she should know, you dont need to tell her specific details of it. It will help in her knowing you and trusting you more, and also respecting you.

Did you suffered from any PTSD symptoms after your tour(s)? Any difficulty adjusting to normal life in society?

    • At first i had a bit of difficulty because of things like jumping at loud noises and not wanting people to stand too closely but all of that went away pretty fast. I dont have nightmares or anything like that so i dont think i have ptsd.

So it shouldn't be hard to relieve some of the experiences you felt by processing it once again through your mind and telling the truth to your wife, embellish your war stories a little bit so it makes it more interesting, talk about the laughs you had in the army and the moments of companionship. Watch a good war documentary together about the specific war you were involved, or a movie. You need closure on this important part of your life and you'll get it by sharing it with the person who you love best and trust in the world.

        • You never had to pick up pieces of people you might have killed and try to figure out what dogtag from a head went with which dogtag from which boot.
