Is it normal that my teenage grand daughter does this?

My teenage Grand daughter(lets call her jane) stays up very late and wakes up around 1:00-3:00pm. She claims all teens stay up late during the summer, but I have a hard time believing her. Me and My husband decided to turn her internet off at 11:30pm, but she's still up late at night and she wakes up around the time(She woke up at 3:40 today! The latest she has ever woke up and she dosen't have internet!) What could she be doing this late at night? She claims what we are doing is unfair and that we should start getting her ready for school a couple weeks before it starts and not in the beginning of July, but I think only juveniles stay up that late. I think that all kids regarless if it is the summer should be in bed by 11:00. She says that the internet helps her go to bed and she won't talk to me and she is acting rude towards me. What should I do and is this normal? Please be honest.

  • Her staying up is normal. You taking away her Internet because she is staying up late on her summer vacation is bullcrap. Get over however you were raised and join present day ways.

  • Give the poor girl a break! That's perfectly normal summertime behavior. I mean if she's not getting in trouble late at night why make her go to bed, why cause drama w her?

  • I'm a young teen and I stay up til like five in the morning and sleep time like 1. Perfectly normal. I'm a girl and wut I usely do it txt and mess around in my room and get on facebook or read magazines. Or wutever but I kno u feel like it's smart taking away Internet but I'd get very annoyed. Lol. But yep def normal.

  • I think it's a normal thing for teenagers to do. I'd rather have her stay up late indoors than be outside staying up late.

She's just being a typical teenager and it's summer. So long as she gets into a different routine a few weeks before school starts, she'll be fine.

I'm a teenager and I'll stay up just going on myspace twitter and facebook
But it's possible that she could be on YouTube just looking at random videos
If your really concerned just ask to check her browsing history I let my parents do it voluntarily

Very normal, Im in my 20's & stay up really late/wake up late in my days off. Ive always been a night person. 11:00 is a very unrealistic time to set for her. Id say IF youre gonna have a time limit (which never work anyways, by the way) but 1-2 am is more realistic. Although I DO agree that the internet should be turned off at 11-12. Depending on age, she shouldnt be up all night on the computer with the amount of wackos on it...that late w/o supervision.

People have different sleep schedules- don't be so uptight- instead wake her up everyday at noon with a cold glass of ice water---- and a lot of people do this

I'm 25 and my sleeping habits still adjust to later and later times if I have a number of days off from work. When I was a teenager I didn't have a phone or internet to distract me and my sisters and I STILL stayed up all night and slept all day during the summer.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • yayasaga

Well if she has a phone I'm sure she's on that at night. If she's still staying up that late regardless of taking the Internet away then there's really no point in taking that away. Most teenagers do sleep in and ESP in the summertime. However 3:40 is a little late everyday.

  • OK, to some of the commentators - have a bit of respect. This Grandmother gave up HER summer to look after HER grandchild in HER home.

Quit acting as if just being a teenager conferred all kinds of rights to be on a ridiculous schedule and rude to the rest of the household.

Yes teenagers do need more sleep. Yes summer is a time of greater freedom. But being up most of the night & awaking mid-afternoon is nuts.

I already made my suggestion: compromises, structure & activities. The girls bored & has nothing to do.

But teenagers don't rule the roost. And when they do, they are up to shit.

It's pretty normal for us Teenagers to stay up very late in the middle of the night during Summer and to wake up way later after 10. Don't take the Internet away from her just because she wakes up later. Please Grow up and let her enjoy the Summer like everyone else including me. Be one of the coolest grandparents that you can be to her!

Let her do her thing. She could be sneaking out and smoking meth while getting a train run on her and she isn't doing anything of the sort probably. I stayed up till dawn on the phone or online or just watching TV when I was in schoolin the summer. let her keep her internet at night if its not stopping her. My mom always used to say "nothing good happens that late at night, u don't need to be there" but I wanted to see for myself lol

I'm 18 and I usually go to sleep at around 1 a.m but only for an hour or so, I'm most productive at around 3 a.m so do a lot of the things I need to do at that time. I don't seem to need sleep like a lot of other people, I probably only average around 5 hours of sleep a night, probably less if I'm being totally honest. Sleep is a waste of time in my opinion, why sleep for half your life?

no ofense but that's a bit stupid, when it comes to adapting to a night shift it doesn't make a difference whether or not you used to stay up late, all that you need to do to addapt to a different shedual is start aplying that schedual and it will naturally kick in in no time

It is normal, but i don't think its ok to be waking up so late..unless she sleeps in very late. You shouldn't take things away from her, she'll rebel more. & you wouldn't want that. If she won't listen to you about waking up early & when it's time for school...well she leanred her leason and think twice about sleeping in soo much next time..& i knoww i'm a teen.

Since it's summer you might aswell let her stay up, either way she will because teenagers biological clocks are set to sleep later and wake up later anyways. As a teen the latest I've woken up was 4pm and the latest I've been to bed was 6am. Don't worry she's probably up chatting to friends or on the phone.

I stay up late, like till 2 and do random stuff like answer this question. The night time is a time to talk to your other friends and do stuff without your parents knowing. We got a large culture on the internet us kids made.

To say that only juveniles stay up that late is going to piss her off. However that late is very late. I try wake up around 10-11. I have friends who wake up at 12 (im a college student btw). Try waking her up if she sleeps too late. Her biological clock is off a bit and it will take a while to get back to a more reasonable time

Totally normal, and shes being rude to you because you are trying to control her. You dont have to get worried just because she doesn't live her life the same way you live yours. If her sleeping late is interfering with school or work, talk to her about it, but it doesnt sound like it is so I'd just leave it. Everyone I know sleeps in late during holidays

This isn't normal, it's a bad habit. She needs chores but she probably never had them before. Volunteer work might get her some real world responsibility. At my house, she'd lose the internet and phone completely because she's addicted to them. If she's up that late, who's monitoring her use?

    Comment Hidden ( show )
      -
    • Somone

it is normalª, it may not be ok but that-s a different thing. And chores have nothing to doª many people have chores and stay up late.. in my house we don-t have chores, and only my little sister stays up late! and taking internet and phone away it-s extreme besides, shes not addicted! most teenagers does that and its normal (i dont do it and i dont like that others do it but it doesnt make them addicted...)
and why should anyone monitor her use? I mean what are you gonna spy on her? what if she has a blog or an account on this site she doesnt want you to see?? she has a rigth to her privasy.. and besides, whats the worst she could be watching on internet? i mean, sure there are a lot of bad things in the internet, but the worst she would be doing is watching porn (doubt it) and even if she did, thats not so bad...
I do agree on the fact that she should be forced to wake up a little earlier because too mcuh is too mcuh

    It's pretty normal summer-holiday behaviour.
For most of my teenage years we did not have internet and when we did it was in my mother's room... Anyway, I still stayed up well past midnight, reading sometimes till it started to get light again at the horizon or watching TV or videos...
And then I (of course) slept late in at the morning.
Getting up at 3.40 is a bit extreme, but it's not behaviour that will hurt your grand daughter in any way... Just make sure she starts to get into a a more appropriate sleep rythm bevor school starts.

On an unrelated note: Respect for you to take care of your grand daughter over the summer holidays.

I graduated highschool a year ago. every summer i would be up until the sun was up and i slept until 1 or 2. its normal. we feel like since we cant do that in the school year we just do whatever all night! mostly nothing at all. atleast she isnt out getting drunk or something. im sure she isnt up to anything bad. i would talk on the phone or be on the internet talking to friends, watching videos, etc.. dont even worry about getting her schedule right. i would continue the sleep patterns even the night before school. sometimes i would work on a few hours of sleep.. but i remember staying up the whole night before the first day for my last years of highschool. i guarantee by day 2 shell be back on track! i would pass out by 8pm and everything worked out fine. btw i was an honor student through all of middleschool and highschool.. if that counts for anything. i think all teens do this.. good or bad. and turning off the internet would ony piss her off since shes going to stay up anyway!

I think it is normal. She is staying up because her sleep cycle is now used to her staying up late. If you don't want her to do that wake her up at 10 or 11 in the morning. no naps during that day. she will sleep a little earlier. Then wake her up around 9 or 10 in the morning. she will stay up all day tired and fall asleep at night. She needs to straighten up her sleep cycle before school.

In my entire life latest I've slept was 10am and that was after getting in a car accident at 1am. So if u can sleep ur lucky. This is normal. Not only do the JDs do it, but also honors students. What keeps teenagers up all night is the internet, iPod, cellphone, and anything they find entertaining. And during the school year, the thing that keeps AP/IB students up all night is homework -,- Let her be like that until about 2 or 3 weeks before school starts. That should be enough to get her sleeping pattern back on track. Oh but if you want her sleeping pattern to be normal again now, you should have her do some activities instead of sleeping half the day away.

If I don't have anything to get up for, I also start staying up later and later. lately, I stay up until about 4:00 and wake up at 1:00. I would like to be able to go to bed earlier, but then it feels like I'm forcing it, and I don't enjoy sleep. Maybe if you were raised with more internet/tv, you wouldn't go to bed so early either.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • It's called summer school or tutoring early in the morning. She will have to go to sleep. I'm in summer prep for next year (not because I'm a bad student). It helps me go to sleep because I have to get up a 6am.

It is very normal for a teenager to want to stay up late during the summer. However, if you suspect something else is going on, like drugs, then you have something to worry about. Only you as a parent would recognize this to be true, you would have to look for signs. Read up about that if you suspect. Otherwise if grades are good and everything seems normal other than this, you are still the parent. Take control and maybe compromise with her by allowing her to stay up late, but you will wake her up at a certain time everyday regardless of how much sleep she has had. She will adjust her sleeping habit for the summer.

I don't really have any suggestions, I'm sorry. I think some of how I would react as a parent would depend on the kind of child she was. If she was good and did good in school when she's in it, compared to a constantly rebellious (not the most teenagers aren't) disrespectful girl who doesn't do well with get responsibilities. If she is the 2nd one then yes I'd be straightening her out but if she's not then maybe relax a little about staying up late at least she's home.
