Is it normal that my style does not reflect my taste in music?

I love alternative, some Emo stuff, Rock, and my fave band is Tool. My sense of clothing does not reflect this. I was president of the business club and I guess that people would say I dress preppy. Not hollister preppy but like no screen print shirts or hipster stuff that all the kids wear now-a-days. Even when I dance to my fave songs, I feel the music, but my dance style is different then how everyone else dances to the music. I am not a bad dancer, and I don't really fit into those types of crowds, but my music is a huge part of my life. Everytime someone new hears that my favorite band is Tool, or they hear me blasting some heavy metal music in my car, they are always shocked. I'm not really into todays hit music, except the old bands like foo fighters new stuff is always good, but not rhanna or katy perry or anything like that. I like shiny toy guns or Lykki li, But my style reflects none of this at all. Is that normal?

Ps I really like the new fashion like loose fit flower print tops, but everytime I try this stuff on, I think it looks like crap, It really does. I am used to form fitting clothes. I also tried on the ripped jeans look and I think it just looks silly on me. I like those styles, but I just don't really feel like its my style. I would really like to be in those types of crowds sometimes cause I feel like my personality reflects it a whole lot, but I just don't really fit in when it comes to acting and dressing that way. I'm not sure if I need a makeover or what.

I wear t shirts, skinny jeans, aeropostale jackets and vans. PLUS i have a baby face. All my friends know that my favorite band is Linkin Park, but people who see me think that i like sugary sweet music, and i get kind of annoyed. But it's funny in a way, too. Because once i tell them about my music preferences the look on their face is priceless :P

Dress however you want to dress, it's the great thing about freedom.

However depending on your age you could face the whole society telling you to 'grow up' thing. I have no idea where they make that correlation, apparently 'growing up' means blending in and dressing just like everyone else ;)

P.S Tool is also my favourite band ;)

I listen to alternative, metal & "emo" music, I do dress alternative like converses, ripped jeans, I have bright red hair but it's because I genuinely like it and I'm not trying to dress like the music I listen to.

You tried to dress according to the music you listen to & you didn't feel it? no problem with that dress how you want to dress what you feel comfortable in. I understand that sometimes you want what you wear to reflect the music you like but if you're not some skinny jeans wearing guy/ girl no need to force it. Be you.

I like to dress very egdy/goth. I listen to Broadway, counrty and so much more. Style and music doesn't always have to go together. Just do what you like. It doesn't matter.

I'm the same. I like rock but I dress nothing like people in rock bands. My boyfriend is also the same with the exception of the odd band hoodie.

  • I wear shirts and jackets, shoes as I am a teacher. I look like I would probably be into indie or whatever but I live for death metal, post hardcore, tech and southern hardcore. Metal is awesome.
