Is it normal that my sons know so much about sex at age five?

My twin sons, J and S are always talking about sex. They're five years old!
We've always been quite open about sex, never hidden it, let on about the birds and the bees - but recently they keep saying rather innapropriate things.
My family's English, as am I, but my husband Joe and his family are from Ireland, where I now live. In England sex isn't completely off topic - but here, it's a big no-no.
Joe, me, the twins, and my in-laws were taking dinner at our house, when the twins began to chirp away about the old sex. "Dad put his hard penis in Mam's vagina," they said. "Then they thrust together and that's how we were made." I must have blushed. How embarrasing, in front of the strict Roman Catholic in-laws, as well!
John gave them a look, and told them that "it's quite a personal thing that people don't like to discuss with food".
But I don't understand how two five-year-olds could know words like "thrust" and about "hard penises". It just doesn't make sense.
My husband has two brothers, a twin and an older bro, but they wouldn't have enforced that. I haven't and John never would.
So what shall we do? Suggestions please?

    They got it from somewhere.
I think you need to teach them in private that these things are inappropriate to talk about. They are 5 so they don't know any better.

It is somewhat normal. Just watch the crowd that they are hanging around.

John (my hubby) gave them 'the talk' about how these things are personal, and they shouldn't be talking so graphically.

They don't have any real friends at school, but their 'crowd' is mostly myself, my husband, my husband's twin brother, his elder brother, their paternal grandparents, great-grandparents, great-aunties/uncles and my husband's twin's fiancee. No-one who would teach them things like that.

There are a number of ways that they could have been exposed. Television, being in public and hearing conversations that your husband and yourself tuned out to in favor of your own conversation, any sort of media and well hell, school. They may not have friends at school but they heard it somewhere.

  • They got it from somewhere. Because kids don't say things like that without hearing it from somewhere.

Someone must be teaching them this. Ask them.

Am I the only one that noticed this person has posted two other stories about his/her twin sons James and Samuel?

Hey. This is the poster of this story. Yeah, I did post two other stories about my twin sons James and Samuel. Any complaints, please report me or simply stop reading the posts.
Oh - and just to point out, if I say that I'm a mother, which I did two posts up, that kind of implies I'm a 'her'. I am.
      Good day!
      xx

Actually, I think I might have an idea where they learned it.
My two bros in-law often take the twins to the local pub, for a round of pools with my husband. Them and and their mates probably talk about all kinds of sordid subjects without indending the twins to understand.
Oh, the trials of being a mother eh?
