Is it normal that my parents allowed me (underage) to drink alcohol?

A few years ago me and my parents went on holiday to France. It was the last time I went on holiday with them, I was 13 years old then.

The first evening while we were there over dinner my parents had a glass of wine and offered me one too. I was surprised, I had never drank any alcohol before. My parents had always told me to stay away from it. But now they said, while on holiday, the rules should not be so strict. So instead of keeping me away they now actually encouraged me to drink. And I did! I liked it from the very first sip, it was a good wine.

It wasn't like I got drunk or something, but you know, France is a wine country. It's a habit over there to have some with your dinner and we participated in that habit. Later when we were back home the alcohol was off-limits again, except for special occasions.

Is this normal? Did my parents make the right choice by letting me explore alcohol this way?

PS First time I got drunk was last summer, one year later. I was on holiday on Ibiza with my friends. My parents had said holiday is a special occasion and therefor I was allowed to have some alcohol, but they probably didn't mean as much as I had.

I don't feel quite qualified to vote on this one. My mother was a recovering alcoholic, and I vowed not to drink until she did. She drank when I was 17, and I had two boxes of "Seagrams" that New Years. Barely got buzzed.

When I was younger (thirteen or fourteen) I was allowed to have a glass of beer for the New Year. I have not become an alcoholic. As a teenager there has been times when I have abused alcohol.
