Is it normal that my own family grosses me out?

I'm seriously disgusted/grossed out by my own family.

My dad, in his mid-60s only showers one to two times per week. My mom is always (openly) scratching her groin area. My 13-year-old nephew, who's there all the time, is always sitting on the couch, picking his toes - and he/his feet are always dirty. At one point, I saw him deliberately pull the back of his shorts down so his bare ass could be directly on the couch. So, obviously, I don't sit on their couch when I'm there.

If I need to use the bathroom, I Clorox-Wipe the seat before sitting. I refuse to eat anything that my mom might cook. I just say I already ate. So many things (and there are LOTS) about them and their habits disgust me so. Not saying I'm Miss Perfect, but jesus christ.

Anyone else been in a similar situation or are in the same boat?

I think friends are God's way of apologizing for family.

Its normal for you to think your family is weird but yours sound particularly crusty. Just be glad their ideals didnt rub off on you.
If it makes you feel any better, my dad used to walk around in a ripped t shirt with no underwear. All the time, just cause he liked the air.

You make your own friends, you inherit your family. We can't help which family we are born into. If they gross you out, which I can understand, get the hell out of there as soon as you can. Your family can be the wind beneath your wings or an anchor to drag you down into the quagmire. In your case it seems it is the latter so fly baby fly.

  • What you feel towards your family is normal, but their habits need some fixing. Based on your statements, they're abnormally filthy.

I think so, too. My dad's excuse for not bathing regularly is: "I don't sweat." It's like... seriously?

As for my nephew - any time I try to correct him on certain habits, since he's still a kid, my mom will basically scream at me to leave him alone. "He's only a kid!" A 13-year-old kid... not a baby that doesn't know any better. It's her only grandson, he can do no wrong.

So yeah... it's hopeless trying to get them to change their ways. Blah!

Yeah, I do my own cooking at my own home - never eat at my mom's unless it's like a holiday and I bring it over myself. Basically anything that she has to touch with her bare hands to prepare, I will not eat. IF I see her wash her hands before preparing food, I may feel differently - but I never see her do so.
