Is it normal that my moods go from one extreme to the next?

So I can be in a good mood, then one tiny thing goes wrong and ill go into a complete rage, I even see red. I've punched myself and have put a couple holes in my wall. Then the rage will simmer and ill burst into tears for like half an hour, then ill go right back to being happy. This happens on a daily basis and multiple times a day. Its driving me crazy. So is this normal?

When you say happy, do you mean happy happy, like giddy almost? Or just comfortable as in you're not stressed or uneasy, you just feel unbothered?

I have issues with rage, so I somewhat understand. I also use to think I had manic-depression but I never really figured it out. My advice is this though, if you're having such emotional extremes shortly after another, I would talk to a therapist about it. I don't recommend taking drugs at all but you something has you on edge, maybe it has been for awhile I don't know but if you wanna talk about it more, I'm here.

I agree with the above user. He seems to know what he's talking about.

It is possible that you have a mood disorder or that you may have trouble coping with stress.

Honestly, I have the same problem. It has gotten better over the years as I have learned to look back on the things that I stressed over that did not turn out so bad in the end.

I would sincerely recommend that you get some sort of help or look up coping strategies for a bad temper, counting to 10, going for a walk, doing some pushups, getting a jog in, or anything to relieve the physical symptoms of anger and anxiety.

There is not always a need to "medicate the problem away" but I would recommend you see a professional to ensure that this emotional problem you are having isn't rooted into anything more complex.

No, despite common belief, medication is rarely the best way to deal with mood problems. It's drug companies taking advantage of people's desire for a "quick fix" to problems. Anti-depressant etc. have little no recorded effect and can often have bad side effects. In truth counselling and other psychological help has a much higher success rate.

Are you serious? I'm so fucking sick of today's "medications are baaaaad" thing. There are things that require medication. If the OP does have bipolar disorder, the right combination of medication will help. Of COURSE therapy is also necessary, but I'm so fucking sick of you people knocking medications when there are people who truly benefit by using them.
        Fuck you.

I'm not saying that "medications are baaaad". Merely that they are not the most important part of dealing with the problem. People often assume it's a complete cure just because it's a tablet and some medication does work like that (anti-histamines, for example). However my claims about low effectiveness and adverse side effects are valid, as this Cochrane summary attests http://summaries.cochrane.org/CD005454/antidepr...

PS: I'd rather we didn't resort to the use of expletives.

Fair enough. Medications aren't the "complete" cure. However, if you suffer from a mental illness, they really are necessary to stabilize your brain well enough to be able to use what you learn in therapy. The correct combination of meds and therapy are necessary for those with mental disorders.

I believe that extreme happiness flip flopping to extreme sad/mad and back and forth is characteristic of being bipolar. U might need a psychiatrist.

If its been going on for awhile I would see your doctor who can them give you options, a therapist may be recommended and/or referred and help you too. Good luck

  • No. It happens to me sometimes. If it happened every day I would have gone to see someone by now. One time I got a phone call and for some reason it stressed me out. They wanted me to call them back, I think it was my dad. I threw my phone across the room then I started crying because I was so angry. Then I started laughing. Another time someone said something to me (wasn't anything bad, normal conversation) and I went into a rage. I took the closest thing to me, a giant chocolate bar, and crushed it.

Eh... it could be a lot of things, really. I wouldn't jump right away to say bipolar disorder though. Just speak with a therapist. Good luck!

I would say bipolar. Go get some help.

  • Bi polar is when the moods usually last for days at a time (you'll be sad for four days straight, then for the next three days you'll think you're the king of the universe) with alot of "magical thinking". Switching from one mood to another, and then another is "Cyclothymia".

It sounds like Cyclothymia to me.

I have the same symptoms, and I've been diagnosed to have what is now called Bipolar Disorder (BPD) aka Manic Depression.

It's a mood disorder that has dramatic mood swings going from being happy to being sad; or being happy then changing to rage and then back to happy again and repeating over and over throughout the entire day. (Everyone is different and thats why we need a qualified therapist or Psychiatrist to evaluate our symptoms.)

BPD (Bipolar Disorder) is a serious genetic disorder... and we will not just snap out of it as some people have suggested here. Mania also causes sleeplessness which can go on for days at a time along with possible hallucinations, psychosis, grandiose delusions, and possible paranoid rage.

WebMD.com has a very good explanation which you should read. (Just copy and paste the following link to your browser, or click on the following link to their webpage.)
