Is it normal that my mom is so protective?

I've been friends with a girl who we will call Jane for six years and we've been best friends for four years. I've been to her house a grand total of two times, and I've always been hounded by phone calls from my mom every half hour while I was there. I wanted to go hang out with her, but my mom said that I'm not allowed to go to her house because my 18-year-old brother never asked to do those things. My brother was and still is an introvert and never WANTED to go to anyone's house, so I don't think that should be carried on to me. Is it normal for my mom to be so overbearing and sheltering?

I always think over-protective parents are really shooting themselves in the foot. In my experience, children who aren't allowed to make reasonable decisions themselves or aren't given a reasonable amount of freedom end up going crazy once they are on their own. Don't do that to yourself! I'm sure your mother is trying to do her best for you. Just don't be stupid when you finally can make your own decisions.

Ugh. Unfortunately my parents are similar and it seems to be fairly common. They still try to control my sister who is now 25 and has a kid.

Sounds like something my brother would have written two years ago. ...but he's just a horny bastard, so my parents were right in keeping an eye on him.

Some moms can be like that. If you're 18 then your mom can't tell you what to do anymore. If you're under 18 tell her that you're going to do what you're going to do anyway, and she has to accept it. Maybe she doesn't have to drive you around but if you can get there what's she gonna do?

She loves you. Otherwise, she wouldn't care.
