Is it normal that my lettuce seedlings wilt and die at their stems?

My lettuces are a few weeks old now as I grew them from seeds in seed raising mix. The majority of them die sadly as they wilt at their stems and I usually find them just sitting on top of the soil (dead) :O Why is this, can anyone help me please..?

You have to chop them very finely, lettuce have tiny mouths.

How are you growing them and what is your climate like?

I'm growing them in trays for starters until they are old enough to be transplanted outdoors. We are in summer now, so it's perfect for growing lettuces, though mine are kept under shelter at the moment but they still have adequate light.

You're not in Australia, are you? I heard about record temperatures there and lettuces are really sensitive to temperature.

Ha! It's okay. I know how offensive it is to Kiwis to ask if they're Aussies. Same with Canadians/Americans and Zimbabweans/South Africans.

I got told to always ask NZ, Canada, Zimbabwe first as if the person is an Aussie, American, South African they'd be less offended than the other way around.

In your case, if I'd have heard an accent, I'd have got it. But it's just words here so I went for statistics. Most of the southern hemisphere on this site who speak English and who'd grow lettuce are Aussies.

              Either way, sorry!
