Is it normal that my girlfriend said my hero like a damsel in distress

I have seen the old classic show or movie where the "damsel in distress" is a theme. In this theme, the female character is placed in a rather embarrassing situation by a monster of some sort and imprisoned by them in some way. She is eventually rescued by a male hero of some sort. A little dated, and sometimes sexist, a lot of modern films show this theme like Princess Leia in Star Wars for example. Anyway, in some circumstances, after she is rescued, said damsel will reach over and kiss her male rescuer and say "My Hero!"
I had a weird thing happen the other day. I was going to meet my girlfriend for lunch after one of her college classes but I was a touch late getting to the campus. When I got there, her ex-boyfriend was harassing her. Right as I walked up, he was trying to grab her arm. I, of course, being the civilized man that I am, tried not to use violence but I quickly pulled him away from her. He backed off as I blocked her from him. Once he was gone, my girlfriend smiled at me, wrapped her arms around me, and actually said: "My Hero!"
I've heard that in movies and stuff and I thought it was sort of cute that she said that but is it normal that she said that?

Sounds like she was probably trying to be a little funny or reference those old movies, but that doesn't mean she wasn't genuinely grateful you got her out of that situation too.

Very true. She probably liked the fact that I came to her rescue and probably was being "cute" by saying My Hero. I thought of that. It just seemed weird because I only ever heard the damsel in distress say that in movies. It was cute to hear my girlfriend say it. It resonates in my head as a sign of chivalry. I'm not trying to be arrogant or full of myself, but having her wrap her arms around me and say: My Hero! made me feel like a real hero. It just sounds like something a female damsel would say in a movie

That's perfectly normal. You helped her out, and she liked it. Quite nice of you I'd say.

Thank you but I am her current boyfriend. Naturally, I will protect her from her ex boyfriend. He didn't treat her well. It wasn't so bad to the point where he abused her, but she told me he tried to be possessive and control her.
Anyway, it was her reaction that got me. Naturally she would like it that I came to her rescue, but I can't believe she actually said: "My Hero," like a damsel in distress in a movie. That's the part that got me. It was cute but it sounded weird just because I haven't heard the "My Hero" in reality. That's all.

Well that's certainly odd. I've never heard anyone use those words either, but I suppose you're just really lucky.

This is very normal. I agree that it’s very cute. I have seen women do this before. Like when men do something as simple as lifting a heavy object or opening a stuck jar lid for their wives or girlfriends I’ve seen the women clasp their hands beneath their chins, flutter their eyelashes, and sigh “My hero!” just like the damsels in distress did in the melodramas when their brave, strong, dashing heroes rescued them from the railroad tracks where the villain had tied them. The women really do appreciate what the men have done for them and want to do something more than a simple thank you so they choose this cute, fun way to show gratitude to their chivalrous, gallant knights in shining armor. What you did really for your girlfriend really was brave and heroic. It’s awesome that guys today can be chivalrous like you were. If what she did made you feel like a hero that’s great because you deserved it. So if she ever does it again enjoy it and like the heroes in melodramas tip say “Aw shucks, Miss, tweren’t nothin’”.
