Is it normal that my friends don't accept being lent money?

A certain scenario has been repeating over and over lately. I go out to have dinner with some friends... and sometimes someone doesn't have enough money. So, instead of accepting money from others, they stubbornly refuse to be lent the money and just stays there without eating all night.

I just don't understand why people are so proud about this. I would understand not accepting 500$, but what's so wrong about accepting 10 or 20$??

I think it's an ego thing or not wanting to feel needy.

I have friends like that. I tell them it's 100% fine, that they can pay me back whenever and they'll still say no. I'll offer once more but that's it. After that, i respect them and just let them be.

I see where they're coming from though. I don't like being lent money either. I have money, if i forget it then that's my problem and i'll pay the price for it. But, if someone makes me feel like it's fine and i know i'll pay them back the next day, i'll accept the offer.

It probably isn't that they are too proud, it's that they aren't going to waste their money on over priced food when they have a refrigerator and pantry at home. In college I would much much rather buy a couple days worth of weed and then not eat when my friends go out to restaurants, than waste 20 bucks on a meal.

One time I was eating with my friends and he kept conplaining he was sick and needed a drink. I offered to buy him a drink he refused and kept asking and he kept complaining till he got up to get his cousin lunch. Fed up with his refusing, I take out some money and hand itnto his cousin. I said to go up there and buy him whatever he wants. He finally spends my money and says its an "Arabic" thing. He explains that Arabians don't take money unless cornered and they have to take it.

I think its normal. I dont like accepting money cuz it makes me feel uncomfortable. Like, what should I say? Thanks? Doesnt seem enough. Besides I dont like to owe people anything.

Overall I tend to want to loan money to the ones who don't ask for anything especially if it's someone I like enough that I'd be willing to just give it to them. When loans are few and far between with people who repay them promptly life's so much sweeter. I find the people who are always asking for money and have a new sob story every week to be in need of some sort of intervention more so than any loan of money.

Because they don't like the cloud of debt hanging over their head.

Some people keep pestering the lendee when am i getting my $20 back etc.

Exactly. I haven't loaned money to a soul in years and I like it that way. I also haven't borrowed money from anyone except maybe my folks either.

Regarding the pestering thing, it's been my experience that the people one has to repeatedly ask about loan payment usually end up avoiding the lender and often times have no intention of repaying the loan.

I tend to see the unpaid loan as a small fee to weed out mooching people I don't need in my life anyway.

I guess it depends on why no money.

If for being poor, I've always had the policy of "I'll get the tab, you get the tip"

If for being temporarily light, maybe something like "Oh you forgot your wallet? I'll get it tonight and you pick up the tab next time"
