Is it normal that my friends and i act this way?

So I've been friends with four people for quite some time...? Let's just call them A,B,C, and D. So, A and I have been together for about nine years. B, C, and I, for seven years. D and I, for about 2 and a half years.
We insult each other, make each other feel bad, trample on each other's feelings... all that stuff. And yet, we're still comfortable with each other enough to tell each other secrets, have hearty laughs together, cry together, just gather around together and have fun. It's like we just get each other. And when we actually try to do things like, compliment each other, we shiver and just brush it off as creepy and never speak about it again. So it's kind of awkward for us to actually do things like that.
We've actually had many meetings with our counsellor because, well... we fought a lot. Surprise, surprise.

So the thing is, how and why are we still there for one another even though sometimes we like hurting each other?

I was in one of those 'group' friendships. I thought it was do great even though I would go home crying more than half the time. I decided to step away and see what it would be like without them, it was actually really great and now I have friends where we rarely ever get in fights and when we do it's over stupid things that blow over in a couple of hours.I have been much happier since I've found new friends. So it is normal, but not always the best friendship to be in.

It sounds like ya'll get along by not getting along.
