Is it normal that my friend lies so much?

My friend is a 100% liar. She lies that she has a boyfriend, she lies that her parents beat her, she lies about her old school...you get the picture. I'm just kinda sick of it. Is it normal? Why does she do this other than the usual "to get attention?"

Some people feel like they need to lie in order for people to like them. They soak in what other people say because people enjoy it, then they turn around and use it as their own. I've seen it done, you create a world all your own. Full of what YOU want it to be and eventually you lose sight of what truly is real and you can't stop lying.

Like other said, it is a problem.

Habitual liar? That's a problem. If she is she probably lies about little things too like what she had for breakfast. It doesn't make sense, but it IS a problem.

    Intervention is an option.

Maybe she feels like life is boring and she feels she has to make up stuff to impress people or have something to talk about. Perhaps she just isn't confident about her own self worth.

Maybe she just needs compassion and friends advice.

  • I knew someone at school who lied about EVERYTHING. Made up pets and boyfriends, all sorts. I never understood it. Still don't.

  • she might be damaged from childhood, possible, tell her you want to be good friends and she doesnt have to lie to you but if she does you cant be close, shame

We've all got friends who are fantasists. The friend of mine who did it, did so because he and his family were ultra-competitive. His lies got bigger and stupider, and it imploded badly.

One of my friends is just like that. He feels the need to always be right or the best so he lies like 95.9% of th time. The funniest part is when the lies implode yet they still refuse to admit it.

Someone phoned my ex-friend on his home number, asked him how he was, and he said, "Yeah, I'm really good. I'm in Brazil at the moment". They had a bit of a chat about Brazil and rainforests and stuff. After the conversation ended, the person who phoned him remembered that he'd called his home number. In England.

Loads of stuff like this happened and when one person questioned him in public, suddenly everyone had something from the past that they were curious about, something that didn't quite add up. He must have felt like his world had caved in because the life he'd built around people just crumbled.

Basic rule of life, I guess. If you're going to lie to people, do it to random strangers. Not your friends, your family, and your partner.
