Is it normal that my friend is so abusive?

My friend at my school is very agressive. He is my best friend however. But he goes around hitting people if they agitate him at all. Like if someone disagrees at all he will hit them anywhere on the body except face repeatedly! he does not touch me however, seeing that i have showed him i do not tolerate it. Anyone know why he does this? As further background into him his dad left him when he was little and his mom is abusive, so i think that is it. any other ideas?

    You definitely did answer your own question. Being abandoned by a parent is a huge blow, especially to a younger psyche. And if his mom hit him, he now sees that as how to vent, and he's projecting his anger at his parents on everyone else who irritates him. It's proven that victims of abuse have a higher rate of either becoming abusive themselves, or getting into abusive relationships.

    Sounds like he really needs help. I just hope he'll be open to being helped

    No excuses for his behavior. If he wants to beat on something he should get a punching bag
