Is it normal that my father doesn't know what a "safeword" is?

He's in his early 60s, and in case your wondering he encountered the word in xkcd. (And no, I didn't feel like explaining.)

  • On a related note, I just had to tell him what MILF means. I spared some embarrassment by feigning ignorance on the exact acronym. I just said it meant a hot older woman.

I'd be horrified if my dad knew what that meant.

  • To be clear, the BDSM meaning IS what I'm talking about. It's just that I've known the term as long as I can remember, despite not being involved in anything like that myself. I thought it was common knowledge.

I know it IS the BDSM safeword you meant, that's also what the XKCD comic referred to.

What I thought the story would be about is that you had some type of incestuous relationship and that he had no limits in the Dom/sub game and did not respect your safeword and pushed it farther than consented. Or something of the sort. Perhaps reading too many troll stories will do that to a person.

Anyways, onto your father not knowing what it means. His, as is my father's, is a completely different generation. They did not grow up or were young adults who had access to the same kind of information (I was going to use the word crap here) that we do. Hence, they don't know the same useless crap we do. Personally, I know because I'm curious about everything, not because I'm a dominatrix or a slave.

As far as XKCD is concerned, if I'm not mistaken, there is or used to be a blog/forum where they explained and discussed each of the strips. Let me know if it just died down or if your dad got it, will you? :D

Okay. Is he a old fashioned person? I have relatives that are and they're completely clueless about BDSM. BDSM is becoming more known then it was about 20yrs ago, but allot of it is still kept within the community. Some people know about it and some people don't. It's interesting how that works.

I thought that too... but you can miss things =P

Just like I don't think many people in my environment know what bestiality or zoophilia is...

Hahahaha Had I known this was the story I would've checked it out earlier. I was sure it was a BDSM thing with your daddy. XKCD rocks my panties off!!! Botanists also have ridiculous safewords.

    Has he figured out yet?
