Is it normal that my dad hit me?

I'm almost 21 years old. I told my dad to shut up and from the other room he jumped up and started screaming at me. He got into my face and cornered me against the wall and continued screaming. I pushed him away so he hit me and yelled, "hit me again, I dare you!" So I whacked him and pushed him away and he kept hitting me back until I walked out of the house. He came out 10 minutes later to "talk it over" but I told him to go away. My mom said it almost looked like he was in a fight in a bar. Is it normal that he got that aggressive with me? I know I shouldn't have told him to shut up or pushed him first, but I'm a 21 year old girl and he actually cornered me and put his hands on me.

    This isn't healthy or normal at all. He shouldn't be touching you like that and he seems to have anger issues. That's extremely messed up.

    Child abuse certainly shouldn't be normal! I'm just glad to hear you hit him back rather than just taking it and cowering in a corner. Regardless, violence is not the way to solve things. I suspect that violence was and continues to be common place in your family of origin.

    I won't tell you whether or not you ought to move out on your own or whatever, but I highly encourage you not to tolerate nor perpetrate violence from or towards any friends or romantic suitors in your newly adult life. It's no way to live!

    Just out of curiosity, does your father have any history of drug or alcohol abuse?

      No he's never had anything like that, just a lot of anger I think.

        Well, anger or not it still not appropriate for him to just haul off and hit you. Does he hit your mother and or do you have any brothers and or sisters that he hits as well?

    That is completely not normal. No one should ever make you feel uncomfortable or put their hands on you. Yes, you hit him first but it was absolutely called for if he cornered you. You really should talk to your mother and make sure she doesn't get the same thing or worse often. There are plenty of men and women out their with severe anger problems and are alright with hitting their children or spouse. Don't let him do that to you again. No matter where you are police or friends would not stand for this. Domestic violence is a horrible crime, No matter what someone will have your back.

      I actually go to college a few hours away most of the year, I'm off on Summer break which is why I'm living at home right now.
