The normal age for a child to be weened is 6 months to a year I'm pretty sure. It's quite an odd thing that he still does it. A mother in a National Geographic Taboo episode said that she still breastfed her 5 year old son because it was a bonding time for them. Who knows? But it'll be embarrassing for him when he's older and he starts dating to admit that he wasn't weened until (hopefully) nine.
It may be your place to speak up, it may not, but if it is do so. Just think about your brother's pride.

Paediatricians recommend breastfeeding for upto two years. 6 months is "common" in the US because Americans are over-sensitive when it comes to genitals and nudity. Still feeding at 9 is fine.

What normal age are you talking about? You should check your info. I have watched this programme on NatGeo and I think that there is nothing wrong in breastfeeding a young child. I don't think there is anything wrong with that. Why should he be embarrassed? Why should his brother 'speak up'? This is none of his business.

9 is pretty old to still be breastfeeding. The weaning age for humans technically is 2 to 5 years old, but most people wean their children much younger than that. Personally I wouldn't before 2 years if I were to breastfeed. :x

But by 9 you should be pretty much off it.. it's not necessarily wrong, just a bit unusual. You'd have to know far more about the parenting and the child to really get an idea if this was effecting him negatively or not.

I completely agree it's unusual but I definitely don't see anything wrong in a lady still breastfeeding her nine year old

No, your mother should've weaned him off a long time ago. This needs to end!

What's wrong with a society of grown boys still nursing? It's so progressive. That way we could be trained to be totally dependent on someone else and avoid any personal responsibility.

Oh... it's already that way here in the US where dependence on govt is forward thinking. Keep the handouts coming! Working sucks! Is my check here yet?

Breastfeeding is recommended until the age of 2. For the first 6 months a baby should be breastfed only and then solid foods should start being added for developmental purposes (i.e., chewing, proper mouth formation, etc.).

After that, it's not necessary for proper development or for a bond between the mother and child. In fact, at the age of 9 that type of bond would be mildly disturbing, since puberty isn't that far off.

Sounds like child abuse to me. You should report it.

Yeah, no, it's totally normal-- if your mom's that freak-ass Cybil Shepard or that scary fat lady named Bessie who was 6 ft tall, never bathed and ran for sherriff of my hometown. Her kids would walk in the bar, nudge her and grunt and then stand there, feeding like calves. They all ended up 7+ feet tall. It SHOULD be normal anyway. We could grow giants who are too dumb to argue with us smart folk.

He is too old for breastfeeding. I think it will cause more problems then it would help. Have them check with the childs physician, I bet he/she will say too old !

No because when you child wants milk you can't whip out your breast

I don't think there is anything wrong in that. You're just living in a society which consider this situation to be awkward. I think you should not interfere because it's not your problem.

I would not be surprised if everyone saying negative things about this are also Americans. They are so hung up over sex there. I am Australian and don't think there is anything wrong with it. Breast milk is full of nutrients and evidence shows that the longer someone is breastfed as a child, the better their health as an adult. But Americans associate breasts with sex so much that breastfeeding is seen as somehow sexual and shameful. It is the exact opposite. The US needs to grow up and stop acting like 5 year olds every time some talks about "pee-pee parts"..
