Is it normal that my boyfriend gave me a hickey on my nipple?

I was with my boyfriend the other day and we were doing foreplay stuff and he was sucking my nipples and it felt really good. But the next day my left nipple was really sore and tender and there were little red-purple spots on it, sort of like a hickey. It didn't hurt when he was doing it, but I do have masochistic tendancies so I might not have noticed the pain. Is it normal that I got a hickey on my nipple? I've never heard of this happening to anyone before.
