Is it normal that my back is in constant pain?

My back is in constant pain, and I don't know why. Every morning, it's a fight to get up, because it hurts so much, and it literally feels like my back is being smashed with a sledge hammer. I guess the most common thing to which my pain could be equated would be a sore back following an abnormally large amount of sit ups incorrectly executed. Ugh, I'm just so sick of this, as it's nearly debilitating, and I can't even ride my bike or play tennis because of it anymore. Oh, and if this helps, I'm an 18 year old male, 6'1 and 180-185 lbs.

Try a chiropractor. I have back problems and went to tons of doctors that could not even tell me what was wrong. Finally a chiropractor found out. Good luck.

You shouldn't feel any back pain being as young.
I think it's normal to have back pain if you lead a very sedentary lifestyle and work on the computer all day long or do a very physical job that strains the back, like carrying boxes, bookbinding or something like that. And your age definitely is an important factor to consider, it's most likely to start in your late 20's and early 30's, not in your teens.
If you stretch every day and do exercises you shouldn't feel any back pain, I know this because I'm very sedentary and my back pain lessens only if I start getting active.
But if it's a numbing pain it's not normal and you should see a doctor, maybe you could have a hernia or other serious problem.

My mattress is only like 2-3 years old :/ I guess I'll probably go to the doctor as soon as I can afford it... :/

After strenuous exercise its very normal to feel aches and pains but if this is happening for no reason you can think of then you should see a doctor about it. One of my past bf's had a spinal disorder and arthritis and he was 22 at the time. It might also be attributed to your mattress or sleeping habits.
