Is it normal that my ankle is still painful and swollen?

About a month ago, I was moving some furniture outside at night with my mom. I was going backwards and slipped, fell down from the deck, and hurt my ankle. It was extremely swollen, and we went to the ER right away. They gave me an x-ray and told me it wasn't broken, just sprained. About two weeks later, even after constant rest, ice, compression, and elevation, I was in the same amount of pain and it was still just as swollen as before. I went in again to double check if it was broken, and again the x-ray came up negative.

Yesterday, I slipped on a loose rug and twisted my ankle again. My whole leg hurts, and my foot is even MORE pained. I just don't know what to do. Is it normal to be in this much pain for this long??? Is there anything I can do to help it? I was just about to start swing dancing classes, when might I be able to go to those? :(

You might have torn or stretched your ankle cap (the rounded part of your ankle, on the side). It can happen a lot of you play volleyball or a sport that involves your feet. Maybe you did something in your sleep? It could also be a sore muscle that's been deprived of potassium and protein. If that's the case, try incorperating a it of fruit into your breakfast or lunch. If you have an ankle brace from an old injury, wear that for a few weeks until the pain dwindles. If not, try wrapping it in a tight gauze, and try to keep it at a 70-90 degree angle. You might want to put it in ice a few times and elevate it if nothing else works. And you should try either Advil or Aleve for the pain.

    Go back to the doctors/ER.

My daughter did much the same thing. After a visit to the clinic she was also told the same thing, put in a soft cast and sent home.
Several months later she went to a doctor because it was still hurting and was told it was indeed broken and had healed improperly. She had to have surgery and a real cast, all costing a small fortune and completely disrupting her life.
Perhaps you might want to get it looked at by someone (a doctor) under less pressure and with more experience than an ER resident?
